Our recruiter had told us that we would be getting one months pay as severance at the completion of our contract.

We assumed that it was in the contract, but 4 months into teaching we've noticed it's not there.

Did we get screwed? Did they do away with severance for EPIK? Do other EPIK teachers have severance pay in their contracts???

Don't worry, you're fine. Severance is not a contractual matter - it's covered under K labor law.

If its an EPIK contract than severance is covered under article 13, subsection 4.

It does not state this on our contract under article 13 (we compared with a friend in another province).

However, we talked to our POE and they informed us that it is Korean Law. So thanks settles it for us. Thanks to all who replied!

My school is saying they might not be able to pay my severance until the day after my contract completes (and several days after my visa expires). Anyone else hearing this? Do most people receive it with their last pay check?

Yea, I heard this and pitched a fuss a few weeks back with my coordinator and POE which led to them agreeing to pay it on August 25th pay day. I wasn't going to take September 1st or 10th as an answer since my visa expires on August 31st and I have my air ticket booked. Also air ticket is reimbursed by mileage or kilometerage; not what it would cost to go home one way economy class. All it requires is an order from above for your school accountant to pay you the money. When something is not stated in detail in the contract, the school accountant needs more instruction and the FT can't give them even though FT knows what should happen.

Now if you worked more than 12 months, but less than 24 months, do you get more severance pay?
