In the past (maybe 5-7 years ago), the Korean driving test wasn't done the way it is now. If I recall, the Korean driving test involved making three letters, an "S", a "T", and a "Z" in your car. Pass that, and you got your license. I had a Korean friend from years ago ask me ...

Friend: What's there left to do after you get your Korean license?
Me: I dunno.
Friend: Learn to drive.

Wink

My wife got her license that way, and has had a license for close to 10 years now. She doesn't drive. In fact, she can't. But she's got a license. It's my suspicion that the majority of idiots on the roads these days, obtained their licenses in the same way, and thus were never really ever taught how to drive. The new way isn't much better (hell, 60% on the written test!), but just as I failed the "Short / Technical Course", I'm sure most Korean drivers who got their licenses in the past would also fail. That still doesn't teach people to use indicator lights, stop lane hopping, etc. However, you get used to it. In fact, I've become a great "Korean Driver". I'm in trouble when I go home...

I've got my korean licence and my Canadian licence will expire before I return to Canada.

I checked the renewal process for my licence. As it turns out, in BC you can renew your licence upto three years after it has expired.

No new test, just go to the licencing office and pay your $45 and you are set.

Cheers

most of the information is here... of course you do need to use your brain a little.. this could be a hassle if you don't have 1.

point being hammer... here is a thread on drivers licenses, if you have a question about them it would be intelligent to ask here and keep all the information in 1 place for everybody to use... prairieboy gave you a detailed reply, did you read it? combine the information, 2+2=, i didn't know how to get a license but after reading here i do.. the only thing i did know was with a current license from my home country i can get an international license, the rest was answered here.

Thats pretty cool! This link gives a bit more info.

I wonder if its the same for other states.

My QLD license expires this March and my Korean one expires in 2006. I'm not sure what to do though. I'm not temporarily living overseas (no longer considered an Australian resident) and technically should not be able to apply for renewel. (Need to sign a form saying when you intend to return to AU: could this affect your residency for tax purposes??)

If I visit Australia for a holiday I will (ironically) need my Korean license to drive there (you can drive for a period of up to three months starting from when you take up permanent residence in QLD again).

This is my question:

Do you need a current Australian driver license to renew a Korean one?
If my Korean one also expires I'll be up %^&* creek without a paddle whenever I visit Australia for a holiday.

If you have to renew your (QLD) license and are only living in Korea temporarily, go to this link. http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/driver.nsf/index/interstateoverseas

cheers

International drivers' licences in Australia and I believe the rest of the world are issued by motoring organisations. I have had my International drivers' licence issued by the RACQ in Queensland for the last four years. I have never been questioned by police on the odd occassion that a licence has been asked for. We were able to get our licence certified by the embassy in Seoul and then apply for a Korean licence. That changed in either late 2002 or early 2003. As we drive on the right had side of the road we have to do the complete Korean licencing gig. The written test, eye test and then a driving test. I think you will find that if you have a Korean licence, that when you go back to Oz, they will issue you an Australian equivalent if you take up permanent residency again. Each state is different, but they all have web sutes that are linked to each other. You can also check with the embassy in Seoul, they are generally very helpful.
