| They love him, they hate him, it's Park Chung Hee. Anyone know a good book about the era when he was dictator? |

I've been looking for a decent biography for a while, too. The only things I've been able to find are analyses of his "groundbreaking" economic policies - kind of "he wasn't too hot on human rights, but goodness me he got a lot of TVs made".
I have an 83 year old neighbour (a zainichi Korean - born in Japan) who loves him. He reckons a period of totalitarianism was necessary to get the country on track economically and prevent a fall to the communists. There may be some truth in that, but Park was a pretty vile man (he was an enthusiastic persecutor of his own people during the Japanese occupation). Let's face it: there's only one thing Koreans love more than bossing about inferiors, and that's being bossed about by superiors.
Isn't his daughter still involved in politics?
Not much help with the book title, sorry! |

Hello,
I've only been able to find one book about Park Chung-Hee in English. The title is Developmental Dictatorship and the Park Chung-Hee Era. It is a collection of essays covering the economic, political and societal aspects of his reign. I got my copy at Seoul Selection. If there aren't any left I'm sure you can give them a call and they'll order one for you. Good Luck! On a personal note I have indeed come to the conclusion that if Park Chung-Hee didn't do what he did South Korea would still be poverty stricken. I just had to add my two cents to get some of those Pinkos angry  ! |

| Not to hijack the thread, but does anyone have recommendations on a good book about Korean history that starts from Three Kingdom era and goes up to the time the Japanese colonized Korea around 1900? I have read The Two Koreas already which covers contemporary history. |

I just picked up one a few weeks ago called "Korea's Place in the Sun". It may not be actually what you are looking for, but a decent book none the less that begins from ancient times. The first 130 or so pages deal with the time period you seem interested in...although the bulk of the book is devoted to the 40's and beyond. |

I've heard of that one. My preference is something that covers the older history of Korea since I've read quite a bit about the more recent part. It might not be something that even keeps my interest long enough to finish the book. I struggled with The Two Koreas as it was dry. |
