There is an interesting discussion going on at other forums lately about some comments made recently on the Korean TV program "Misuda". You've probably seen it, it's the one where a bunch of western (primarily) women who speak Korean fairly well dress up in short skirts and sit on a platform while they answer questions.

Here's what they have to say about Western men who teach in Korea, and about Korean women who date Western guys:

Misuda wrote:
After choosing as the worst foreigners in Korea those foreigners who always speak English or their native language, never learning Korean, and easily meet Korean women they said, most western men approach Korean women by saying they want to learn Korean.

They also said there are many foreigners who live in Korea for many years but speak poor Korean. Among the criticisms a particularly strong one came from Japan-born Sayuri, who said, when you go to a foreign country, learning that countrys language is proper etiquette.

They also implicitly criticized the attitude of Korean women who get involved with tall foreign men who speak English.

UK-born Eva said, foreign men who were not popular in their home countries are treated like kings Its so strange that western men who of course have very plan features are always being followed by pretty girls.

Eva added, if a Korean friend of mine is thinking about having a western boyfriend I tell her to let me see him first. Once my Korean friends boyfriend from the UK turned out to have a girlfriend back in the UK.

Kusty: REALLY bad-looking, TOTAL loner (왕따) teachers in Korea often have GORGEOUS Korean women by their sides. Its amazing how (she gets cut off by the MC) oh theyre loners to the core.

Eva: If you listen to these men speak English, its so dry, so boring, and their jokes so lame, but the girls cant understand all of it so its fun for them.

Sayuri: Its the same in Japan. The guys abroad who have few friends and dont look all that great come to Japan and get a girlfriend almost instantly. I once was walking through Harajuku and saw a guy who looked just like Austin Powers, complete with the awkward teeth screw that.

Christina: I dont want to go back to my home country and see those punks. Since coming to Korea Ive become so popular!

Eva sounds bitter that no white guys are interested in her.

The idea of her appointing herself as some arbiter of taste for her Korean friends is pretty hilarious, though.

However, Sayuri does make a compelling case for teaching in Japan.

I'm sure there are a lot of westerners who are like that. I'm going to Korea because

1. I spent 6 months working my ass off convincing a Korean exchange student that I'm worth it,

2. My family is breaking up and I have no roots in America anymore, and

3. I love languages, I'm a linguist, I would love to speak Korean as fluently as the next person (and I have to in order to Convince my girlfriend's father to let us marry).

Goddamn stereotypes.

So basically, they just say what the guys here say about the girls back home. *Shrugs* Vicious circle.

Women say that the guys a bunch of losers who are creepy, unpopular and uneducated wankers.

Men say the women are overweight, can't dress properly and are crazy Nazifems.

... Maybe both parties should hook up. Have some sort of kinky hate-sexfest.

Good God.

From the banter that gets tossed around, you'd think Western men and women in Korea were sworn enemies. Yet every time I'm out and about, running into other foreigners, everyone is playing nice.

Way to fill the airwaves with even more total rubbish.

So being married to a Korean man (or currently going through a divorce from a Korean man) qualifies someone as a sociologist? Who knew?

There's a reason why the show is called "chatting with the beauties" and not "chatting with the smarties."

I think it goes both ways. There are some foreign guys who foreign women wouldn't find attractive but Korean women do. Not all of the Korean girl dating foreign men are close to being beauty queens themselves and maybe to Korean guys they're downright ugly but to foreign guys they're attractive.
From what I've seen less-attractive foreign guys date less-attractive Korean girls.
Most army guys don't even get Korean girls. I usually see them with Filipinas.
On that show, Chatting with Beauties, the girls are young, just chatting about nothing and have no knowledge about anything.
And about how it's just basic etiquette to learn a countries language well I agree with that and I usually follow that but in Korea it's really hard because everybody is pretty well educated and will just start speaking English to me, even if I try to speak Korean they'll just ignore it and keep speaking English so I kind of gave up trying to learn!

Is Eva the ex GEPIK teacher whose mum was on the show a few weeks ago?

It would be fair and correct to point out that the caucasian contingent on 'chat with beauties' would never be on a show with the word 'beauty' in the title back home either.

It should be called 'chat with below average looking white women'

The worst offenders is the Canadian bird with the horse face (Dominique) and the South African who made a few quid out of the Cass adverts a couple of years ago - they just don't shut up! And they are bloody ugly!

Those girls are only on TV because Korean men want to watch them. It's the same thing. They know it too. Plus the show is scripted.

Misuda exists so Korean blokes can all have a collective stiffie and believe that they are desirable to foreign women (well aside from Vietnamese peasants with mud between their toes and ringworm). Congrats, girls, but don't come running back when Pom-suk knocks the living [MOD EDIT] out of you for not cooking kimchijiggae like his mom did.
