I showed them to some teachers and this was the general reaction:
fat mom: laughter and pointing at the fat body
soft dad: laughter and "what does that mean?"
genius: "haha...student thinks he is genius"
crazy dad: laughter, then "oh, no...tsk tsk tsk...very bad father" after seeing the soju bottle |

I've seen the "soft" thing before. I think they mean their dad's a softy. |

Ahh okay. I was trying to figure it out. I was thinking along the lines of: teddy bears=soft and cuddly=dad |

| Having edited countless student essays I've found most often they admit they meant KIND by their use of "soft". He is kind. |

It's interesting to me how students confuse adjectives. "My (refridgerator/water bottle/pizza/English teacher) is comfortable" always kills me. Do you think they are not understanding the word correctly? Maybe a teacher misused it once and it stuck with them? Or maybe it's just a matter of the kids trying to translate from the Korean...
Van Islander, I know what you mean in your example of essay writing. I used to teach middle school students a few years ago and in their essays they would just look up a word in English that seemed to translate from the Korean, but had nothing to do with the meaning of the sentence. I remember one other teacher telling me a student was trying to express that he felt "depressed or sad" in an essay, but he translated his idea in Korean to "basement" in English. I guess he told the teacher he was thinking he was feeling "low" or "under" his normal self, however I didn't speak to the student myself so I don't know exactly which Korean word he was trying to translate. |

It's definitely a case of trying to translate from Korean.
