I've been listening to U2 since about the early 1980s. My sister picked up a lapel pin~ white on black of them around Christmas 1982 or so when she went to Toronto and they were in the middle of their first American tour.
I later saw them at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal in 1988. I've been following their carreer for quite a while. I really like the War album. That was the first one of theirs that I owned.
About the OP, Achtung Baby took quite a while to grow on me. I love it very much. The Song "Until the End of the World" is a fascinating theological reflection of Jesus and Judas that still resonates with me today.
Joshuah Tree is a good concept album. I think the other is a sort of "anti-U2" statement. Sort of like taking the pee out of themselves. Same with Zooropa.
I think they're both excellent albums, but maybe I personally prefer Achtung Baby a little more. |

Edge invented most of the uses of effects. He is one of the most copied guitarists ever. I find it impossible to believe that Edge has gotten lucky for over 25 years.
What bands do you like? |
i'd like you to cite which uses of effects he invented.
he uses a delay (i think a tape delay), a chorus and a bigmuff distortion pedal, as far as i know.
that's all pretty standard stuff for the rock guitarist in the late 70s/early 80s when he was inventing his 'unique sound'. i hear very little that is truly original or groundbreaking in his style, and so many douchebags like to think that he reinvented the wheel. |

I'm not a fan of U2 but they've done some good stuff - my favorite album being 'War' - and Edge is a great guitar player who concentrates on 'the song' rather than just showing off. Edge has always had his fair share of knockers ("so you've got a delay pedal....whoopdefreakin do buddy!") but I think his style is awesome and miles ahead of some greeser in his grubby jeans and his "axe". Take the intro to 'New Year's Day'.....has atmosphere, paints a picture, says much more than the aforementioned hairy going up and down the fretboard for 20 minutes at a time.
My favorite guitarists: Gilmour, Edge, Harrison. |

well edge certainly didn't invent anything. you cited gilmour - edge has ripped him, harrison and others off (andy gill, robert smith, etc.) liberally.
i've never tried to put down a guitar player for lack of technical proficiency - that's really low. but if someone's mystique needs to be dragged down a few pegs because it just isn't that inspiring, well, fuckin' a.
get the edge to stop boring me to death and maybe i'll recognize his 'genius'. |

"War" or "The Unforgettable Fire"... but the best/my favorite song on "Acthung Baby" was `Until the End of the World'.
As much as I love U2's music, and I really do love their music... right time, right place for me in my life, yada yada; they're just a really really good fusion of The Velvet Underground and something else (it's seems like the The Rolling Stones to me) with something of themselves thrown in too (it's probably their roots in the Dublin post-punk scene). Maybe that's their real genius. I guess you could throw in The Clash, Hendrix, The Beatles, Sonic Youth, and My Bloody Valentine (one some albums) as influences. One of the greatest bands ever?! Certainly, I'd agree; but I'd understand if others don't hear what I hear... The Greatest Band ever, well, I don't know if I'd go that far. I'm sure their music will stand the test of time as well, but I won't be spreading palm leaves under their feet anytime soon.
peace,
ps. this is a funny read: http://fatsdurstonia.blogspot.com/2005/03/most-baleful-influences-on-pop-music.html as long as you don't take yourself too seriously. Best quote on the page:

| We can definitely give Pink Floyd some of the blame for Radiohead, esp. that OK Computer. I guess it takes a village of crap rockers to raise new bands of crap rockers. |

For what its worth, trolling as I am1:
I was intro'd to U2 with Actung Baby.
Excellent, oh yes, TDK 90's have the best bass.
Liked pop, but not as much as Zooropa - how could ya, with the Jonny Cash number an' all?

I have three comments about U2...I'm sorry, four comments:
1) I saw them in concert...not bad
2) Paul Stanley of Kiss when asked about U2, "I can't appreciate a band that bitches about how much life sucks when they are getting rich doing it."
3) Jean Chretien, the Prime Minister of Canada, refused to meet with Bono when he was on yet another crusade saying basically, "I am the Prime Minister of Canada, I don't get told how to think by people who sing in a rock band."
4) They are and always have been majestically overrated. Bono said it best when he said at a concert while talking about about the drummer - who started the band - "I'd like to thank XXXX (John?) for giving me the only job I've ever had."
The only job he has ever had?!? And that makes him a globe trotting prophet???

Edge??? An innovative guitarist??? Have you ever heard of Roy Clark? Jimi Hendrix? Jimmy Page? Ritchie Blackmore? Eddie Van Halen? Frank Zappa? For God's sake, even Ace Frehley of Kiss was laying down original lead tracks, as poor a guitarist as he was.
Edge did nothing new. Sad for you. |

Not sure about the Paul Stanley of Kiss quote. U2 is known for writing songs that actually embrace life. I don't think they've ever gone on a life sux campaign.
As with most things Canadian, the Prime Minister of Canada thing is just a carbon copy comment of what George Bush Sr. said about U2 back in 1992.
Can you really blame a rockstar using his star-power to aid the needy? He's already got the fame and fortune, yet he still fights even harder for the causes he's associated with. |

He's a self-admitted non-guitar slinger. If playing a million notes a second qualifies a guitarist as "innovative", then yes, he's not. I think most see him as innovative in a sense that he contributes to the song as a whole with unique textures and sounds, as simple as they may be. He made the signature modulated delay chime sound his own.
How many times do you hear critics or listeners describe a new band as sounding like "U2"? Many. That's how you define innovative.
But as with anything pertaining to music, everyone's entitled to their own tastes. |

Recently saw on Youtube a Live 8 song, Beautiful Day - have to say his voice is strong and good.
Alas, someone else was on guitar, too, hiding in the wings - or it was pre-recorded in parts, and it wasn't delay but a different octave.
Also pre-recorded chorus and screamy bits for Bono.
Still good sound though. Amazing how a decent enough song can become massive due to being plugged in to A1 / expensive equipment. |

| U2's early 80's albums up until Joshua Tree were good. After that.....the songwriting went in the trash.... |
