For my 3rd, 4th, and 5/6th graders' last day of summer camp, which will also be the last day of summer for them in general, I want to show movies. My lesson plan reflects this. Each movie goes with the previous day's lesson for the class, at least that is the plan. My co-teacher wants me to change this plan. I think movies are fun, and since it will be in English, the class may actually pick up something. The movies are cartoons and characters they already know, and are age appropriate.

What would you do if you were in this situation? Should I tell my co-teacher outright I will not change the plan, should I say I'll change the plan and then show the movies anyway, or just change the plan? My co-teacher will not be teaching with me for the camp, but I know things get around in this place. Still, I just want the kids to have one day of relaxation during the camp.

Tell your coteacher that you're responsible for Summer Camp, and that if he or she wants you to change the lesson plans, he or she should also be there to implement the new lesson plans.

Just let them know that English practice is more than just everyone jumping around or reading from textbooks. Sometimes watching a movie is the perfect way to passively get some English into their heads.

Good luck! Very Happy

Tell her to take a flying leap at the moon. "These plans are set and will not be changed. In the future, if you want more input, you need to get more involved."

Your camp your plans.

I'm surprised you have a co-teacher. I''ve always been on my own and I likes it that way.

Strange that she doesn't like you using videos to teach since that's the preferred Korean teaching method.

Ask her who is going to be teaching with you. Apparently we all have a co-teacher teaching with us...on paper. This should make her feel guilty enough to lay off of you. Or she'll decide to come in and you'll be stuck with a co-teacher cramping your style. Twisted Evil

It's best to just say "I'll see what I can do." and then do what you want.

I have to teach every class. Only Koreans are allowed to show movies in my school. Yay.

Can you blame them?

Students can watch all the TV/Movies/YouTube they want on their own time. Using them in class, regardless of educational value, minimizes student interaction with native speakers.

Do what I did. They asked me for an overview of my lessons for my summer camp and so for the last day I just put "Review". Straight, simple and understandable. Little do they know that this review consists of watching a movie only partially related back to the subject matter.

My principal showed up at a few of my classes during winter camp and he yelled at the teachers at my school for not helping and letting the kids watch a movie.. But, after we explained it was in English and everything that went with the movie (lesson, discussion, vocab, watever) it was fine.. Show more proof to your coteacher about how the movie will be beneficial. Better to put effort to showing the work you put in this rather than just not listening/telling them off.

The videos stimulate a lot of conversation in my classes. My 5th and 6th grade elementary school students have been learning English with me using just Bugs Bunny cartoons. We had a sentence making contest the other day and the top sentence was 14 words which is a lot coming out of the mouth of a 6th grader. If they are interested in the video they talk a lot. They don't even notice that the video sometimes plays less than 3 minutes of a 40 minute class. Showing videos is not good but using them to spark interest and increase conversation is.

I am in complete agreement. However, a principal will simply ask, "Why do we pay you for something a Korean teacher could do."

Using brief clips in the classroom is gold. It does stimulate conversation. Movie day or hour or class is simply lazy.

Maybe they should just fire us all and go back to the English Stone Age of yesteryear.

I built an entire class around films last year and it was a HUGE success. Yes, full-length films. Lots of parents are asking for another one, but I'm declining - I need something more interesting to me.

What other people have done or the educational value of it is beside the point.

The partner teacher is saying no movies, which means the school doesn't want the movies.

You can not really blame them. Showing a movie at the end of semester is one thing, showing films in a camp that parents pay extra money for is another.

If you are being asked to take out the movies then you take out the movies.
