I'm teaching my first conversational class next Tuesday and I'm a bit stumped. My job is to be an English speaker and talk a lot but I'm unsure how I am supposed to do this as the Korean co-teacher is the one going through all the actual text material. All that is left for me is to read passages and ask students questions.

Ask your co-teacher as to what you're suppose to do. |

If you can't figure out what to do for a conversational class...
Choose a topic, introduce some vocabulary, then attempt to invoke some opinions. It obviously depends on the level of their ability, I get asked to conversation classes with students who are not at that level so we do more role plays and conversation games instead. |

Sounds like they want you to be the human tape recorder. Sorry to hear that. |

this is actually what I asked them jokingly and they agreed. While my main objective is to keep my coworkers happy I dont want to be a one-trick pony either. |

Didn't you think about this before you came?
Buy a couple of books and projected yourself like you know what you're doing. |

I was going to creatively wing it until I found out I was teaching a militant all boys high school. My recruiter intentionally did not tell me anything until I landed in Korea. |

Some big issues here. first you will take time to learn how to teach conversational English. This is no big deal as we all start somewhere.
The really big issue here is the Korean teacher who is not moving over so you can teach conversational English. Believe me what they will be teaching will have little to do with conversational English. So you need to say excuse me I am here to do a job and you are not letting me do that.
The main part of conversation is students learning how to think and put words together to speak in sentences. Koreans tend to think that it involves learning phrases and strange grammar rules.
I have broke it down into students learning how to listen and also writing and speaking sentences. If they can't write a proper sentence it will tend to flow out of their mouth the same way.
Most important day is the day you tell the Korean teacher to step aside and please let you use your years of experience in using a language to shine through. good luck. |
