|
|
I have an interview tomorrow for a private school job in Gimhae.
Anybody want to recommend questions I should ask the director? It's worth noting that I double majored in English and Communication in college and that I once won a "funniest college student competition" at one of the comedy clubs in Seattle. I feel that I'm extremely qualified for the job and am hoping to get the best contract possible out of this whole situation.
Thanks in advance.
p.s. People near Busan/Gimhae are encouraged to reply because it looks like I might be heading out your way : )

I'm not sure about that qualification, but you might want to ask, up front, if the director is planning to metaphorically bend you over and have his way with your contract until its curled up in a cold shower, crying. |

I've done stand up comedy in Seattle Washington for 7 years. Would an employer see that as a qualification to be an excellent english teacher? One that smiles a lot and is always waving his gangly arms around?

Matthew, that wasn't a hijack, that was a warning. A shady hagwon owner will tell you whatever they think you want to hear just to get a warm body there. And you'll never know who's shady and who's straight-up till you experience it for yourself.
Just make sure your contract has equitable termination terms and it's not written in how screwed over you'll be if you find out it's the shadiest joint in town. Study the contract FAQs and decide from there what you're getting yourself into. |

No, I've never played lacrosse before although I'm not against the idea. I'll look into it once I get to Korea and have gotten settled a little bit.
Just looking at that subway map makes me excited to get out to Busan. |

I'd advise against that. Better to present a more serious professional air and then after your hired. This could be one your 'Hidden Gems'. |

thanks for the advice everyone, some more helpful than others. so... the recruiter i talked to said the director was going to call between 9 and 10 pm, i got all my stuff organized and just sat for an hour, waiting, no call, nothing.
it might have been a blessing in disguise because after thinking things over i think i may just fly to seoul on my own dime and find a job once i'm already in Korea. i was having second thoughts choosing the busan area over seoul to begin with and this seems to make the decision easier. this recruiter business seems too much like telemarketing to me, i think i might have better luck doing these interviews in person. |

Don't come to Korea for interviews as you will have to fly back home to do your visa. Please read this board as much as possible as you are as green as they come. This board has a lot of good info and you just need to take the time to sift through it. |
