I've noticed that my school gets a lot of new students during the year. Most of the students are Koreans who live overseas due to their parent's work.
Anyways, I have a lot of students that come from Japan and China who have lived there for 3-5 years. Surprisingly, those students speak English a lot better than my normal Korean students. Generally, the English level among my students go like this:
Lived in US/Canada/NZ/Australia/UK
Lived in Hong Kong/Singapore/Philippines
Lived in China/Japan
Students who never lived overseas
I first wondered why the Korean students living in China and Japan spoke English so well. I asked them and they told me that they went to "International Schools" in China and Japan, where they spoke English in the classrooms.
They also said many Koreans are in those schools, and between classes or after school they would speak Korean because they are more comfortable speaking it.
It made me wonder, why aren't there MORE schools in Korea modeled after International Schools that is available for domestic Koreans?
I have these students who can speak 3-4 languages in my school, however, they only speak Korean at my school. I feel like its such a waste. After a year or 2, they are going to forget most of the language they learned. |

Actually, they have created a handful of "global" schools such as Seoul Global High School. There are a number of articles about this school in the Korea Times, and it was touted as having an English immersion program. All subjects except Korea language, literature, and history were supposed to be taught in English.
Unfortunately, all classes unless taught by an FT are in Korean, and the FT's have very little input into grading. Most classes have 2 Korean and 1 foreign teacher. The FT has 10% input into grading, so the Korean kids pay minimal attention to the FT and hang on every word of the Korean teachers.
Just one of many reasons, English language education is such a failure in this country. |
