I see a future where your smart phone takes up the majority of work we do on 'puters.

Instead of having huge desk top computers, a docking station that outputs your phone to a display would be far more efficient. It seems like 10 kilos of components is over kill to check your email and look at porn. When your smart phone could do it, probably better.

My premise is that the computers we use, especially for work (teachers) are hideously over powered. Of course gamers and film guys will still want a serious hog, but the majority of us don't need anything more than a browser.

I agree, and I'm actually almost already there. I use my itouch quite a bit, and it's with my 24/7. It serves as one of my main computers.

But I am one of those 'film' guys, or will be, so I'll still need the high power computer for rendering and graphic works, etc.

Imagine a smart phone with a projector and a portable blue tooth keyboard. You would be able to project a 17inch crisp bright screen and pull out a bluetooth key board and treat it as a regular desktop so you can type easily in these forms and compare OSs and the such. Smile

Another tech I expect to grow is small glasses you wear as your computer screen. So you could type with a blue tooth keyboard and have a 24'' screen simulated in your glasses...

I'm waiting for the day when you can get retina implants that project the image into your vision. Also cochlea implants that work like headphones. Laughing Laughing

As much as we've improved in computing technology in the last 10 years, we are still virtually neolithic in terms of battery technology. Only when this improves will true mobile computing be realised.

Except when North Korea does a DDOS attack and brings down the cloud. Then you are basically working with an empty box. Or when GMail goes down again.

Aside from the issue of network connection there is the issue of processing power. Most cloud appliances (and even netbooks) do a poor job of heavy photo editing, any video editing, and large database management.

I don't expect the Chrome OS to make much of an impact. You will probably see some brands of netbooks being sold with the Chrome OS installed and charging some monthly fee for cloud access. Aside from that, Chrome OS won't be in much demand because it won't be compatible with Office, Adobe, and other day to day necessities.

I agree with you mostly, but it will compete initially with Windows 7 Basic which is targeted for netbooks. Google offers 'offline' services as well as online cloud services. You can work with Gmail or there Documents offline, and then when you are online it automatically changes and updates everything you did. And the fact that such a successful company is even going into the OS territory is reason for Microsoft to fear, even if they will never be complete competitors. But a lot can happen in 10 years, and who knows what Google will do.

I covered that in my OP. Obviously, those people and gamers would need a more powerful rig. But almost no-one does that stuff. 99% of people use their 'puter to check their email and look at lolcatz.

MS is bringing out a web based office app. Have you ever used google docs? It does everything I need because I'm a neophyte at word processing but I'm probably better than 75% of people.

Why can't it be made compatible with Office?. Also, Apple just bought Adobe and seems to be holding it in hand along with Google.
