The principal got wind of the normal practice of showing movies for the last one or two weeks of class. During my first class (a movie/worksheet deal) the principal's lap dog poked his head in and said "no movie, no game" to me and made his way onto the next class.

There are tests on the last day of the second week. Does anyone have any good class ideas? I need some soon! I'm in a bind.

Thanks!

Free time! It's neither a movie nor a game.

Yeah, I just might. "Free talking in English" which is the polite way of saying a quiet degeneration into sleep class.

It's bad enough that its the week after exams. Its like finishing a marathon only to have someone tell you that you must run another. Maybe I'll help promote a student uprising (in English!)

Try an EFL/ESL LESSON thats what you are being paid for.

Step one- Go to Kyobo bookstore in Seoul.
Step two- Buy a textbook either "Side BY Side" or "Interchange".
If you can't afford that go to tesl journal and click "things for teachers"
then click "Tell me more" by Andrew Finch. Photo copy pages enough for each student.

Step Three -Teach

The Principal of my school is on a no movie power trip. She was away for two days last week and those days were pretty much exclusively movie days in every class.

It makes no sense. What is the purpose of this time?

How long do you have to plan an alternative activity?

The Principal is just doing his/her job in making sure all the teachers do their job. What's wrong with that.

I use something like Mr.Bean to teach things like past tense. Show them a scene (the best example is when he makes a sandwich for lunch on a park bench), have them take notes (in Korean) while watching it. Show it again, to make sure they have enough notes. Then have them write in English what he did/what happened. Between past tense, new vobab, and new idioms, there's enough material in one scene for at least two classes.

I don't do it for a week, but for one or two classes it's okay.

Sure, that's true. But there is exactly zero motivation for the students. They aren't going to be tested on what ever you cover, and they know it. Added to the fact that as long as there is some follow up a movie can be just as constructive (I would argue more so) as a textbook.

Teach what? It should be their summer vacation. They don't want to be there, nor should they. Most of the students feel like they've been robbed of something and insulted. Indeed, they have.

Of course I could try to teach them something during this period... but all that would happen is a lot of hate directed towards me. Not worth it.

Usually the KTs want that time for study/ exam practice. Oh well.

Do something a little hands on eg recount writing using pictures to make a newpaper style photo, write a caption, headline etc and a recount of what happened. Have a short grammar focus-passive tense.

It's YOUR time the same as the students. Sitting through a tween film for the umpteenth can be pure tedium.

Robbed of exactly what? Why would they feel robbed and insulted? They are used to being in school at this time.

Teach English. Or have all of your students mastered the language?

The high road cop out.

"The system is flawed! Suffer the children! I won't be a cog in the oppressive machine!" Yeah, yeah...you have been part of it since you decided to come here.

So, having the kids like you is more important than teaching them?

Sorry your two-week movie plan got trashed....just do your job already.
