today i decided to get hooked up to cable tv and was quoted very high prices, from the local yongsan cable tv company.

18,000 per month and 35,000 installation fee...
WITH A 130,000 DEPOSIT!

i have never heard of this before. The company in question says the deposit is for a special box which is needed to recieve CNN, but they don't even offer BBC, or star world, which is what i really want.

is this the best offer on the market? i thought u can get these channels without boxes, etc?

I just wanted a cheap alternative to going out at nites, but feel this is ridiculous -- any suggestions?

Install fees range from 30,000 to 60,000 depending on where you are, they try to inflate things to those levels. I just had mine installed in Mok-4-dong and they wanted to hit me with 60,000 and I laughed and they dropped it to a free install.

They do charge you a rental fee for the descrabmler if you get the advanced packages with all the movies and so on, and the crap is they put CNN on that package which is what I wanted. That is how they do these things, I don't much care for it, but if you want the English movies and CNN .... well there you go .... So I had a free install, get charged 6000 service/rental fee and 17,000 for the entire channel package.

You'll be able to get around that only in places where they have it wired such that a descrambler is located regionally (as in the complex or a central location). My building doesn't and thus needed the box ....

No deposit for me
