I wonder,

If we conducted a social experiment. What do you think would happen?

Do you think it would end up in anarchy, democracy, or dictatorship?

I once went a whole class without saying a word, writing on the board that I had a really sore throat so I needed them to talk in English, us doing whatever, as long as it's in English.

One little dictator took over until another student objected and a quasi-democratic decision to change the English game occured. It was fascinating.

(Not the same thing as I was there to wave my finger to enforce groundrules regarding language use and was the presence of authority.)

My girls are at school for 15 hours a day.

I can assure you that, given the opportunity, they would sleep for the entire period.

This happened a couple of times at my old hagwon because of scheduling mistakes, and it was a pretty big academy. The students policed themselves and kept dead quiet, hoping that no one would notice. One class spent a whole period like that. They were pretty proud of themselves until they learned they would have to make up the class and stay an extra period.

I remember once my teacher didn't come to class. We hung out a bit and then when he realized he wasn't coming, so some of us went home, others went and finished other projects for class, and so forth. No idea what you'd really call that though.

We later found out he got mixed up with the schedule due to the holidays, so it was all cool.

But I guess this thread is more for classes in Korea, though huh? Embarassed Can I still count?

I have tried the silent method a couple of times and as long as you have a good method of control already in place then no difference.

If I am not there at all

My younger ones, 1/4 destroy my markers and write on my wite board, a 1/4 try to kill each other, a 1/4 look for me and the final 1/4 go next door to my co-teacher.

My older ones half start playing knuckle bones, the other half either go to sleep or finish their home work.

I was sick for a week with a stomach bug and was in and out of the classroom often.

Just to claify I teach an after school program with a max class size of 14

Probably lots of fun, provided the box cutters don't make an appearance.

Guarantee that they'd sleep. Hell, my high school girls will sleep through even the funnest games with no educational value whatsoever.

Elementary school kids would make Lord of the Flies proud. HS would take the opportunity to sleep. MS could go either way.

Yeah. Some of my middle school classes would happily chat, work on other projects, read a comic book, or doodle. Maybe some kids would play a card game or have arm wrestling competitions.

In other classes, some students would be lying on the ground with broken limbs after being hazed and beaten by the class bullies, while other kids fearfully stand around and watch in silent horror.

Middle school: a total toss up.
