Really? I'm surprised because Koreans really hate the Chinese. BTW guys, can you not quote every previous quote when you quote somebody? It's not that hard deleting some of the quotes. |
The Chinese army invaded our land and killed a lot of Koreans in the last war and they continue to support a murderous regime in the North. If the Chinese army did that to any western country I'm sure people in that country would have some negative emotions. Still, many Koreans especially the young do not hate the Chinese people, just the chinese government.
samcheokguy: I'm just questioning calico"s argument that multiculturalism is a part of the West's "ideals". The multiculturalism we see in America today is more a result of having about 10 percent of your population being black and therefore making a practical compromise in the face of real violent threats made by black leaders in the 1960s. I just don't see where middle-class white folks really chose multiculturalism. Btw, Im not criticizing white people, Im just saying lets stop the propaganda. |

| I think the lack of personal hygeine is raised the most among younger Koreans when describing Chinese. |

The guy doesn't like certain 'tribes...' Any points for guessing which?
Notice how he also twisted around what what I wrote.
He's a two trick poney. It's all he ever does.
1. Anything he doesn't agree with he'll attempt to turn it around as in the case above instead of providing a logical and honest argument.
2. If you make a good argument against him, say pointing out a flaw in Korean society or culture, instead of accepting it and discussing it's ramifications or how it could be improved - he'll then point out 'yeah but such and such happend in America.. lol...
And that's all you'll get folks....

The Chinese invaded America? Oh wait, your OTHER land, the one you don't live in. And might not even fit in.
Yes, let's stop the propaganda. |

All foreigners are barred from Korea except the Chinese? Really? You sure about that?

Well you didn't make an argument. You just made a personal ad hominem attack and I returned it in kind. Also, we all know that folks like you like to compare Korea to the West only when it's favorable to the West. But when it's not favorable then you pull out the "Gee, but I wasn't talking about America/West or my personal favorite 'But I'm Canadian!!!',
Btw, what was your ID before you were ummm...banned? |

is there some way to quote the entire thread with each post? Maybe copy and paste in a few dictionary pages. |

Wow are you ever informative. I bet you get a lot of people coming to you for information. Speaking of military stuff over on the job forum there's a guy wondering how to avoid military service - think you'd have some tips for one of your tribesmen? |

| I'm pretty vocal with my co-teachers. I often gripe about cultural differences and they often join in with me. This also goes for teachers in my teacher classes. I had a long conversation with the VP about how I thought the education system here was broken and he agreed with me. |

First off the PVA did not invade Korea. Do some more research on the Korean War.
Second, the Korean War is not the reason Koreans hate the Chinese. Maybe for you (are you even Korean?) but I would be surprised if Korean prejudice against the Chinese was a result of the Korean War, especially if you factor in the fact that many Koreans actually like North Korea. |

Yep, Koreans' most common complaints about Chinese are definitely that they are "dirty" and they "steal stuff." It's really not political. |

We actually learn more about the biases and prejudices of westerners so I really appreciate the opportunity that Dave Sperling has provided.
For years this site was the epicenter of hate against Koreans. There are racists in every group of course but westerners are "special" in that instead of merely celebrating white pride, which I think is a good thing, they have a tendency to slip over into white supremacist mode.

This is the statement with which you started. You were not only talking about the United States, but the entirety of Western culture. I responded in kind with all of Western multi-cultural societies in mind. I have never stated it was perfect, but you will still not be able to name one Asian country in which they even treat other varying Asians within their own societies any better.
As I have previously stated, please prove me wrong. Let's get specific.
QUOTE Komerican: "You keep in making claims that the US is "open and egalitarian" but the facts don't support your argument. For example, for many decades the US barred Asian immigration to the US. So if these "values and ideals of the West" exist then they have existed for only a short time and certainly not so long that people like you can come to Korean and lecture Koreans on it.[/quote]
"... people like me can come to Korea and lecture Koreans on it."
People like me, huh? What exactly is that in your estimation, in all of a few posts in which I have attempted to have a rational discussion with you? Where have you seen me lecture Korean people? And you come on this thread accusing Westerners - of which you are one, no less - of bigotry. Well, I hope the irony of that comment doesn't fly over your head. The fact of the matter is that just about every human society on earth has a history of bigotry. You can keep digging in the past all you want, but the issue is where are we now?
Again, please find me contemporary examples of other Asian societies to contrast with the bigotry and xenophobia of contemporary Western societies. If you cannot or refuse to do so, then you are just interested in spewing hatred and not in discussion.
I have also made claims that the U.S. is imperfect, as is its history and its multi-culturalism ... is there any other country that isn't? However, the IDEALS of American society are equality, and we have the civil rights battles and court cases to prove it. It doesn't mean that it is perfect, but there is an idea that discrimination and xenophobia is wrong.
Yes, there is the history of all ethnic groups in America including the Chinese and other Asian-Americans, but if you are going to start naming Western societies as the great, racist satan, then let's start looking at Asian societies as well for some perspective. What exactly is the history of not only their own immigrants, but other ethnic Asians that have been on the same soil for thousands of years? |
