Yes, there is the history of all ethnic groups in America including the Chinese and other Asian-Americans, but if you are going to start naming Western societies as the great, racist satan, then let's start looking at Asian societies as well for some perspective. What exactly is the history of not only their own immigrants, but other ethnic Asians that have been on the same soil for thousands of years?

Simple, they learned it from white people. Even when they didn't even know white people existed and never had contact with them.

The Romans and the Celts are both 'western' and both have had major influences upon Western culture. But there is not a 'unified' Western theory. In addition the term 'white' is difficult, are the berbers and Tauregs white? What about the Arabs? What about Black Semites?
-Many Asian-americans argue for a pan-asianism that has never existed. The Catholic Church served to unite a 'west' after the fall of Rome. But many things in modern 'western' Culture aren't even Catholic or Roman.
-The point I'm trying to make is the over simplification of 'east and west' is due to the posings of the 'orientalists' of the late colonialists and the rabid over reaction of the pro-independence asian exceptionalism movement.
-in addition we clearly see the areas that were governed by the US after WWII in Asia became the most powerful states in the region. This would seem to decisively proove the superiority of a 'western' style viewpoint.

Lets not let convoluted history make us act naive...

I think we all know that 'western' or 'the west' both politically and geographically in todays parlance means 'Northern Hemisphere, West of the Caucus mountains.'

Simple.

We're learning from the Koreans to do things in a Korean manner.

I would NEVER praise the culture and the people of Korea. For any reason. At any time.

Well, maybe if they had a gun to my head. But I'd still have to think about it.

Hey! Many of the "apologists" on here would disagree! Right Urbanmyth and CaptainCorea? Kim Jong Il is #1 because he's Korean, right?

Actually, if you listen ever more closely, dirty is a word that you will hear for a lot of different groups.

blah blah blah. People suck. Bottom line. No one is perfect.

American has done a bunch of trash. Korea has done a bunch of trash.

Americans are racists. Koreans are racists.

Although I err on the side of Korea in most of these threads, anyone who actually bothers to listen to what I'm trying to say knows I'm against the extremists who claim that America is a paradise and Korea is Perdition.

I'm having a great time here. There's about 50,000 things Korea could do better but that's not why I'm here.

I've only jumped into this because some of the stuff said on this board belongs over at Stormfront. Take off the tolerant and enlightened costume and open your heart and let that hate out...on the Stormfront board.

Given the anger some people have it is clear the oney isn't worth it because you are seriously twacked out. Do yourself a favor and get a plane ticket.

Decide right here right now- Either this country is dirt and you need to leave or this place is the place that is providing you with that 'something', whatever it is, and you need to accept it for better or worse, in sickness and in health.

there really are blogs devoted to serious discussions of Korea's many international failings, it's miserbale culture, its suicide rate, it protectionism, it's lackluster education system, it's political anarachy, it's rabid xenophobia, and so on
...Daves is not the place to discuss it intelligently. People here care about opinions, not facts.

Yet, what I consistently read on this discussion board are endless rants and complaints that border on downright racism.

Why not be true to thyself in public as well? I mean, you need to be vocal about what you really think. Otherwise, you'll never make progress on improving the low-level status of teachers here. By just posting here, you're simply preaching to the choir.

Sometimes one is so appalled one does not know what to say (기가 막힌다!). Smile

Sometimes one knows only other foreigners will understand anyway. Smile

But, in general, I agree. Off with the kid gloves, forget all notions of politeness, and if you have a problem tell people what you really think.

I am.

BTW, such "two-faced" behaviour is not limited to foreigners in Korea. Koreans also are pretty good at smiling to your face then backstabbing you in the teachers room.

It's not limited to people in Korea either. I would say it's human nature to put a positive face forward in public, but speak negatively in private. Got nothing to do with foreigners, Koreans, or whatever.

I feel the same way.

Some of the posters on here have met me. They know I lay it on the line and expect people to be real in return. If you want to be respected by the right kinds of people that's what you gotta do. Wink

The constant racist complaining on this forum has nothing to do with backstabbing at work. Their backstabbing because of the ignorance that precedes you. Laughing
