Looked over the origins of bands on my PC that aren't from Canada or the UK and this is what I found from the Westcoast:
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti. Awesome, hard to believe not from Portland. Very experimental. I don't have it in me to listen to straight through since I stopped doing drugs. Though, "Every Night I Die at Miyagi's" is perfectly pop and is regularly played on my Zune.
Dandy Warhols: Oh good, they are from Portland. Owe some of their charm to their very public feud with Brian Jonestown Massacre.
A bit passe, though.
Lavender Diamond: Folky-pop fun when you have a sweet tooth, but not exceeding expectations in any way.
I've come to realize I need to listen to more CA/Westcoast bands. They lack the melancholy yet somehow optimistic charm of Midwestern and Eastern bands somehow, though. Also, there seems to be an arrogance that doesn't translate as well for me as the Brit pop hubris. Also noticed while some solo artists I like (Elliott Smith) settled in the West, they mainly came from the Midwest and I think that experience influenced them in ways that those who aren't landlocked can really appreciate. |

Skid Row - 18 and life

One of my karaoke favorites. The chicks go wild when I do my high-pitched scream at the end. By blinkin' Jesus, they do. |
