Hey everyone! I just wanted to share something with you all. So, I was looking for teaching jobs in Korea and stumbled upon a site that reviews hagwons in Korea: http://www.hagwon.reliableteacher.com/. They don't have lot of reviews up yet, but the site has a lot of potential. You could submit your own hagwon reviews too.

This is a brilliant idea and I wish it could be utilized a lot better. It would really help the expat community in Korea. There are excellent sites for reviewing schools in Japan and China like this and they have been running successfully for years. But for some strange reason it never works for Korea. I think the three main reasons are:

1. The expat community in Korea aren't as helpful. I have taught ESL in many other countries and many of the expats there are helpful, but most of the ESL teachers in Korea are just in it for the money.
2. Most of the hagwons or English academies in Korea that are unlawful get closed down, or go bankrupt or switch names. Happy English Time school one year can close down and switch to "Go Go English academy" the next year. Many of them are poorly managed and go bankrupt year in and year out. Many of them are ma and pa shops.
3. Teachers are afraid to speak out and tell the truth because if they do, they won't get their severance.

On another ESL site that caters to the Pusan community there was a listed website that rated the recruiters. It was an awesome idea because it rated all the recruiters based on their phone interviews, the questions they asked, the timeliness of the return call, the professional conduct, the honesty, etc. Most of the recruiters got really bad reviews, especially some of the bigger ones. I think it most of been bad for business so the link got pulled Did ATEK work? Hmm...go figure.
