I love the fact that Seoul gets more exposure to Western culture and people than other parts of the country. |

I've lived inKorea for 5.5 years and perhaps half of it in Seoul.
I like -
Going to insadong for dwaejimorigukbap (pig's face soup) down the old back alley restaurants before seeing a movie at the Seoul Arts cinema there. The characters there are pricelss and I love dwaejimorigukbap.
spending a saturday afternoon window shopping and just ambling around COEX mall just people watching and letting myself get lost in the flow
Hangign out at 'the bar' in Sincheon on a fri or sat night and getting dangerously drunk on their overly strong cocktails and dancing to the eclectic music mix
Spending a sunday morning in Kyobo browsing through new books
going out on any weeknight and just turning up in any old dong / subway stop area and getting ripped on a few bottles of soju at a pojangmacha, smoking some cigs and then stopping at different snack stalls on the drunken amble home to have some fried squid, soondae, odeng etc...
sitting outside a familly mart with a friend or two any evening and getting rippped on maeshil-ju or beer
I'm sure I can think of more but I gots to go to my eve job.... |

When I compare Seoul to the other cities I've lived in / visited....
I love how I can get around the city for so cheap. Even taxis are cheap.
I love how you can find surprise housewares sales on the sidewalk. Bins of cheap but essential supplies, a buck a pop
Incheon airport is easy, and easy to get to
Itaewon...a very interesting place. Would it be as interesting in any other city? No.
The feeling of community. This is the best thing about Korea. Kids on bikes and people chatting on the streets, all the time. The neighborhood feel, in the middle of a huge metropolis. Safety. I can understand how Koreans would feel that love for country. (And why I am an "outsider")
Unfortunately, there are more things on my "dislike" list. But I'm a homebody, so "city satisfaction" is not important to me.
Silence Dogood....you like camping on the Han River? Where the heck are you from? I would imagine somewhere with NO lakes or mountains nearby. Good for you anyway. The lack of natural beauty in Seoul is a big MINUS TEN for me. And being near the Han River is...not so good. |

I also remember the free dvd library in the Konkook life building called 'art cube' or 'cine cube.'
They have a huge collection of international dvd's that is amazing. Give you id card, grab your selection and take it to one of the free viewing staions and hey preto.
Wonder if it's still there. I used to go every sat morning in 2003 |

Cheap, fairly clean, available, and efficient public transportation system and taxi. Pretty much beats out most large US cities in that.
I like that the city is bustling and busy but doesn't seem frantic or overwhelming like Hong Kong or even New York.
Safety. Probably my biggest like about Seoul. You can go practically any where and any place and feel as safe as a small town in Iowa.
The girls are hot, and like to wear high heels and mini skirts. Ohhh yeah.
Compared to many large metro cities in the US, rent and utilities are fairly in-expensive.
You get a lot more for your money here. |
