|
Where is a good place to rent a car from?
I have my Korean driver's license and have had it for more than a year.
Price is important, I'd prefer something cheap. Don't care about quality. I just worry that most places won't rent to foreign English teachers.
In my experience, renting a car is always a pain in the ass.
Thanks! |

Haven't used them so can't say how easy/difficult it is but they have a few locations around Seoul and seem quite cheap:

Tried to rent one two weeks ago. Was told it would be 160,000W for a night and that I would have to go to the place with a Korean person who would co-sign it for me. Didn't want to put any of my Korean friends in this position and felt it was all too much hassle, so gave up. Hope you have better luck. |

That's terrible.
I rented a car in Jeju by myself with no problems. Also rented cars in China and Japan. It totally depends on the individual dealer, though. |

I have never had too have a Korean co-sign for me. Do you have a credit card? This and your passport should do. No need to bring your visa or work status up.
The quote for one night is way off, unless you're renting a very expensive car. |

I don't own a credit card...
Is this a problem? I didn't the other times but they just made me make a deposit and pay for insurance. |

This is Kumho's (Hertz in Korea) policy for rentals to foreigner's.
http://www.kumhorent.com/En/Main.aspx
Quote: |
You have to be the age of 25 or higher and to being an International drivers license to use our service. To rent vehicles of small, medium, large, luxury and wagon types to seat 7/ 9 persons, we require the level of international drivers license to be of B or higher. For wagons to seat 12 person |
Their FAQ is not very helpful, unsurprisingly, as it does not state policy but rather answers questions posed by prospective renters.
I had a look at the Avis policies for Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the US. They are much clearer, but generally more restrictive. New Zealand, for example, requires a credit card.
This is the policy for the Incheon Airport location of Hertz (Kumho). Policies may vary from branch to branch.
Quote: |
Cash - Accepted in Korean Won only. Estimated cost of rental required as cash deposit.
Credit Cards accepted |
Generally though, a credit card is very helpful when renting in most countries from international car rental companies. Some countries and rental agencies require it and will not accept a cash deposit. It helps to insure that the company is protected in case you incur a large amount of damage not covered by insurance. You will also likely have a good credit rating if you have a credit card.
For the renter, some cards offer extra insurance protection or deals with certain companies which will offer discounts. If you were renting for a week, for example, it is much more convenient to use a card than to have to pay in cash or leave a rather large deposit, though here it has been made a little easier with the new 50.000 won bill.
It seems the age (experience) of the renter is also an issue. Also, the policy may vary for foreigners depending simply on the whim of the person you are dealing with.
Edit: Whoops, just found this on the Avis Korea website, a little below the other posters information:
Quote: |
Payment
In the case of Payment, all Avis Charge Cards, ACTO, Avis Voucher and Major Credit Cards such as AMEX, Visa, Diners, Master are acceptable.
In addition, Renters can pay in advance or at the time of rental. |
