Okay, so I am in packing mode (sorta) and I am really trying to only bring two luggages...but they are definitely going to be over the 50lb limit. I am shooting for 70lbs (sad I know).
So I wanted to know when you first came to Seoul how many suitcases did you bring? I am kind of tempted to bring 3 and just pay whatever fees the airline will charge me.

| How much of that stuff do you really need?? It might be easier just to put the extra stuff in boxes and have someone ship it to you later... |

Are you moving here for life? Like AgentM said, how much of that do you need? And how strong are you....how on earth are you gonna move 70kg of stuff? I only weigh a few kilos more....it'd be like trying to carry a comatose person around!
Korean Air charges an absolute fortune for extra luggage...something in the region of $50 per extra kilo. Also, you are going to buy things here...when the time comes to leave your 70kg may have morphed into 90 or 100kg. |

.. its LBS not KG..
and I think the fees are like $50 for 20 lbs over the limit, another $50 for more than that, at least it was that for American Airlines. |

Even still, I wouldn't want to have to be lugging around 2 - 3 heavy suitcases! I say travel light, you can pick up the rest of what you need later on. |

It's a girl thing, fellas.  We need to bring everything with us.
Anyway, I'm going to try to settle with one large suitcase and two carry-ons (purse and backpack sort of thing). Bring the important stuff. Dunno if I should bring my blankets or just buy them here. They easy to sell after?
I have been told it's just cheaper to have things mailed to you after. How long do you plan to be there? |

I'm a guy and I'm bringing 2 50 lb bags and possibly a large carry on.
I basically never go clothes shopping in Korea though, so it really is what I'd need for a year's stay. |

I'm just going to bring professional clothes, normal clothes, deodorant, and LARGE TOWELS. Keeping it basic. Plus I heard that in Korea you can get a tailored suit for much cheaper, looking forward to that.

It really is a girl thing...I am going to be there for a year which to some is a lifetime:)
I am pretty sure most of the clothes there and shoes will not fit me so I do not plan on buying clothes there. |

I'm thinking about bringing 2 large suitcases and one small carry on (for the important/valuable stuff). Yes I'm leaving for life, even if I don't end up living in Korea.
Also, I don't like the clothing they sell in Korea. They're either cheap and bad quality or really expensive. Plus I think it's ugly, just personal taste.
I'm still worried about how I'm going to live without books for 2 years though. *cries* |

My bad....I was half asleep when I posted. However, a lot of people travel by Korean Air to come to Korea (in fact some jobs tell their teachers to specifically book a seat on a Korean Air flight). If the OP is travelling with KAL then it will cost her $50 for every additional kilogram....20lbs extra is...what...about 7 or 8kgs? So that's going to be about an extra $400. However, I do know that most airlines, incl. KAL will usually turn a blind eye to up to about 3kg over the limit. Additionally, remember that your carry on usually is not weighed as long as it meets the required dimensions, and you are allowed to take a laptop onto the plane alongside carry on (you can use your laptop case to carry a few extra clothes or some books or something). |

| I just did some checking on a few airlines for extra luggage/overweight fees.. It's incredible how much some charge.. Air Canada charges US $225 per extra bad (+2).. United charges US$ 150... Overweight fees are almost the same price as an extra bag.. So, I'm shipping my extra things home (to US) via surface mail.. I suggest you send your winter things via surface (boat) as they are the heaviest anyway (have them packed and ready and someone can address and send them for you when you get your assignment) ... You'd save some money and your back... and a LOT of hassle getting them to your final destination.. BTW I had 2 LARGE bags and a carry-on when I came and yes they were overweight, but that was 3 years ago before it was such a big deal... |

I brought two. I did bring way too many things, and brought things that I don't wear at all.
Somehow, two years later, I have managed to acquire another two suitcases.
Consider limiting what you're bringing to what you need for the next two seasons, and leave everything else with someone and have them ship it to you. You may not even want it when the time comes.
I'm a girl, and I admit I went overboard. |
