Does anyone know what the doctor should check/test for the ARC card? I hear some doctors try to go overboard to make extra cash.
Thanks |

Mostly standard things like your height, weight, hearing, sight, colour blindness, blood pressure, chest x-ray, piss in this cup please, and blood test. Standard is around W50,000. |

Just don't come in here and expect to pass something like, say, a cannabis test. They usually publicly flog, then deport people who show a positive test for cannabis on their physical.
I'm so glad you weren't asking about cannabis!

At the conclusion of my physical examination in Seoul last year, the supervising physician, Dr. Doramee (do-re-mi?) informed me that something strange had appeared on my EKG but she was too busy to explain it to me. Gee, thanks, I'll go back to the ESL factory now and carry on. |

In regards to blood pressure, do you fail if you have high blood pressure?
In regards to height/weight, do you fail if you're technically obese (according to the BMI index)? |

Straphanger is correct, you won't fail due to high blood pressure, but this question reminded me of another amusing thing that happned during my health exam in Seoul.
I have hypertension, but my meds control it very well, and so when my blood pressure is taken , I usually get an excellent reading.
I suppose because I had literally run to the examination center at the end of my classes for the day -- about an hour before they closed -- my blood pressure was a bit high, but not very high.
Anyway, between the various other tests (vision, hearing, etc.) they kept taking my blood pressure again until they got a reading that made them happy; one they preferred to record.
So laughable. |

That's what the high school school nurse in New Jersey did before letting play on the football team.
Same with the college nurse before letting me join the gym class.
They want you to pass, but they don't want to lie, so they keep on trying until the end result is to their liking.
What would have happened if you didn't get your blood pressure low enough for them to be happy?
Did you write on your job application about your high blood pressure history and medication use? My school contract has those questions and it weirds me out since an employer would get sued and fined for asking that in the States. |

My sys has always run at 125 nominal, but I had it checked here after about 6 months and it was like 155! So I went down to the local doc (not a hospital) and grabbed some pressure pills, laid off the salt and started cooking a little healthier at home, and I'm back down to 130 sys with no help. It took about two months.
My employer knows I keep Xanax in my pocket and eat them all day long. He doesn't care, enrollment is 125% from this time last year, we're waitlisting kids, and trying desperately to expand. He also knows (and most if not all of my students' parents know) I smoke regularly and drink heavily.
We're just so gosh darn successful as a team that he lets the doctors take care of my health, as long as the money keeps rolling in. |

Is Xanax readily available in Korea or did yo bring it from your home country?
When I was in Korea 10 years ago, it was pretty common to smoke. Has it changed since then? In California, there are towns that even prohibit it in the public outdoors (usually, mainly pedestrian heavy shopping streets) |

Xanax is not exactly handed out like candy, but yeah, they have psych drugs here. Just ask. Smoking is everywhere here. High-End cigarettes are 2500 won a pack.
A 24 pack of Budweiser is 40,000 won.
Edit: Something that will blow your mind - literally right now in Daegu, it's 1-0 LG at the bottom of the second with Samsung at bat, no count, 0 outs, and a man on first.
Oops...ball. The point is, LG is literally playing baseball against Samsung. After a while you stop being surprised at things like this. Ask T-J.
2-1 count. |

Yeah. Baseball *teams* ... Not like Comerica Park or the RCA Dome.. We're talking about the Coca Cola Rangers or the Microsoft Twins. |
