Is there anyway of getting a cellphone before the alien registration? I want/need to contact home and am finding it hard to source public payphones. Anyway, I'd like to be able to ring from comfort of my own apartment!

Any ideas guys?

Do you have a computer? Why don't you just use skype? Wait for your arc so you can get a cellphone plan.

Korea doesn't have "burner"/throw-away cell phones?

Like the ones you get at Target or a convenience store for 20 bucks and pay as you go with a credit card linked to the account?

Also, when I was in Korea 10 years ago, incoming calls to cell phones were free no matter who called you (locally/internationally). Is that the case still? Nextel used to do it in the states, but I don't know if it still happens here since Nextel merged with Sprint.

Also also, Do they have unlimited plans in Korea? (i.e. unlimited incoming/outgoing calls for $100/month, unlimited data usage for $30/month, etc...)

You can get the pay as you go phones but I guess it matters on how much you are going to use the phone and for what purpose. If all you are going to do is text, then yeah a pay as you go may be fine. Personally I can't be bothered to top my phone off with credit all the time.

There are so many different plans out there you can get. For international/calling/texting/unlitmited/etc. I pay 33,000 a month for my contract with LG. I get 200 mins and 100 texts. texts over 100 are really cheap...like 50 won. I use skype to call internationally though.

I've heard it's difficult for us foreigners to get cell phones other than prepaid ones. Did you find that to be the case?

Did your school not provide you with a home phone?

You should get your ARC asap.

You can ask around to see if anyone who is leaving is selling their prepay phone.

It's pretty easy to get a plan as long as you have your arc. When I got mine I went with a Korean friend but he didn't have to sign along or anything. I think most places require the arc to be valid for at least 6 more months. If you can't find a Korean to go with it would probably be best to find a place that has a halfway decent English speaker.

I do. I used it from a dive shop in the Philippines looking out at the sunset while drinking a G&T, talking to my mum...fantastic! Seriously, my iPod Touch is the best gadget I've ever owned by far. The only way it would be better would be if it was an iPhone, then I would have a camera and phone (obviously) as well.

How much are Ipod touch and Iphones over here? Anyone know the best korean provider for international rates? Preferably on a pay-as-you-go scheme?

Sadly pay-as-you go systems here suck. Normally, you have to haul your ass down to the store and top it up with a cash payment. I have yet to see anything like an automated top-up service. Korea is the same everywhere you go. It has so much technology, but where it's actually needed it does not exist.
