My contract said I would be given a computer, and I was, but the operating system is Korean.

How do I make it go in English?

Any tips of where to go for good prices?

PS- Is it possible to have two operating systems at once? Would you recommend this?

Well. this is something of an issue. Unless you buy the windows pack and pay a good bit of money, you will have to get a pirated version. If you take the pc to the pc store and have it reformatted, they can put english windows on it and it should not cost you any more than the service normally would be otherwise.

However, whether you can get updates or not is hit or miss. The first pc i bought in Korea had a pirated windows and basically I was notified very often by microsoft programs that i needed to purchase a key. and that my version was pirated and could not update any microsoft software.

Last year I bought a new pc, also with a pirated version (I saw the key scribbled on the wall of the place, and made a joke to the guy about it being illegal and would I be able to get updates) yet it works just fine and have gone through the verification on the Microsoft website and get all updates to everything from microsoft.

It depends on what OS you are running on. If it is Ultimate Vista K, then you can change the language. From what I know, this is the only system that you can change languages.

Your only other option is to have the school buy an English OS, and install it. I don't think you can have 2 OS running at the same time. You can get a fake version of XP pretty easily, but then you can't update your computer.

My old system used to dual-boot Korean / English, and with XP, they live quite comfortably together. Just drop in your CD, install English Windows, make sure you turn on support for East Asian languages, and use a different directory for its home.

If you use programs that are English only, it doesn't matter. They can't/won't display the Korean characters.

A good workaround is to use a USB flash drive and install Firefox and Open Office on the flash drive. Then you run those programs directly from the drive and you're always good to go.

There is a thread in the tech forum that tells you how to change the language over. It is actually possible to change Korean XP to English without reinstalling. Have a trawl though the tech forum. It wasn't that long ago, so it should be on the second or third page.
