Headed down to the Philippines for 9 days. Boracay and hopefully some sunny day.

I was thinking about India for Winter break. Can you give me an idea of what you paid for you ticket? |

| Gotta love these 9 day vacations. I paid 840000 return, plus 120000 for a 6 month visa. Will be cheap when I get there so that it will even it up to the same cost as a Thailand trip. |

Is India really that much cheaper than Thailand? I've looked a bit on the internet and India seemed a little more expensive. India seems like a very worth while experience and I do plan on doing it no matter what, but can i really expect to spend less, day to day, there than in SE Asia? Is it just a matter of getting out of the big cities?
I don't know anyone else that has gone, so any insight you can offer is greatly appreciated. |

Yeah, in my years in Korea I've met more locals who've gone to India than fellow foreign ESL teachers. That could be because Koreans don't mind going all that way for a 3- or 4-day vacation whereas most Westerners I've ever known who talk about India can't imagine less than a few weeks if not months on a trip thereabouts.
I will get to India myself someday, it's on my must-do list. |

Japan for 12 days, challenging hiking in the Alps, bring it on!
India is full of Koreans. Many uni students go there so it feels like you're still in Korea when in India. You can get Korean food in India quite easily, and many guesthouses are geared towards our kimchi eating friends.
I even ate kimchi in Nepal near Poon Hill, and a Korean guy has set up a Korean restaurant in Pokhara. It was funny seeing some ajosshis eating samgyeopsal and smoking Esse plusse ciggies. Koreans are everywhere on the subcontinent.
India is getting a little more expensive these days. You can still do it very cheaply but that means eating crap and staying a hell hole. I no longer want to travel like that. |

My passport expires in December, & additionally, because of Swine flu, I've been implicitly requested to stay in Korea, for summer vacation, by my school. I'll probably spend a day or 2 in Seoul getting a new passport, so I can go to the Philippines in January.
There are still a few places in Korea I haven't seen. Baengnyeongdo, Tapsa Temple at Horse-ear Mountain (Maisan) in Jeollabukdo.

The lake & islands crowned with pagodas, north east of Daejeon. I've forgotten the name, but it starts with a 'D'.
I've only been to Siliguri & Darjeeling in India. It blew my preconceptions of mass poverty on the subcontinent, right out of the water. India is similar to China. Society is highly polarized. If you have money, it's possible to live very well, regardless of whether you're Indian or a foreigner. Instead of the rustbucket busses (very common in Indonesia), that I was expecting, there were big luxury aircon busses to Kolkata at Siliguri.

China - heading to Beijing and Xian!
Koreans keep warning me about the heat, though the weather in Daegu is pretty similar
The tickets were a bit pricier than I'd hoped, but I've been arranging to do this trip with a friend who lives in China...for a while. |
