I'm not a fan of the group, and I like most think they will not likely succeed in the US, but gee...how many of YOU have been on a talk show? Maybe its a crap tv show and maybe opening for the Jonas Brothers is a crap gig..but what other Korean band has made it that far?
Seems some would just relish in the idea that Korean band would fail in the west. I don't understand what drives that kind of mentality..but until some of you are on a nationwide tour or appearing on talk shows, seems kind of ridiculous to knock someone else for it. |

The thing is..if a hometown wonder makes it onto Sally Jessie Raphael (or whoever the daytime hosts are now), do they get exposure in the local newspaper back home? It depends on if you're from a major city or a small hicksville.

OK, but so what? I mean we all recognize that Korea is desperate for international attention, so why would it come as a surprise that a Korean group touring the US and appearing on a talk show gets media attention here in Korea?
No matter whether those girls bomb badly in the US or not...that fact that they were there, toured the US and were on a talk show does more for them than if they toured all over Korea selling out show after show. Just by the fact they were in the US ups their reputation...the same way a Korean can study in some hobunk American university in the US and come back to Korea and be treated like a genius because they have an American degree.
Considering who the fan base of the Jonas brothers are (tween girls) and the fact that going to a school and saying "I am a fan of the "wondergirls" and having a t-shirt of some group that no-one has ever heard of plays to the "Indie" spirit spoken of in the other thread. It really doesn't matter if they are good or not...they are different, exotic, and impressionable young girls will latch on to that (not much different than naive Korean girls latching on to the average waegook because he is different and exotic)
If a New York deli shop gets a spot on the "Today Show" because of their meat selection and great tasting sandwiches...that surely gets written up. Maybe not in the NY times, but it gets attention none the less. Remember this is Korea, and anything that brings a small bit of attention to this country starving for attention (Heinz Ward, Kim Yun Ah, etc) then of course they will write about it.
As a side note..I checked out this Wendy Williams and the shows website after reading this thread (I too was curious who she was...she is hot by the way) but if you check out the lineup for Mondays show(Jimmy Fallon and the Wondergirls) you will see that almost every post is related to how the fans love the group. I only read 30 or so, but the only mention of the other guest on the show (Jimmy Fallon) was to say that the poster hopes he dances to a "Wondergirls" song when on the show.
My point is.. why come down on a group of people following their dream? Ok, so we think their music sucks (were not their demographic after all) but why crap on them and make fun of what little success they have? Seems to me some folks who have issues with Korea in general are looking for any excuse they can find to point out their failures. |

I simply cannot understand the haters on this thread.
Sure I love slagging Korea when it's warrented. But come on, these girls are doing something and getting a little exposure. Good for them and I guess I can see how Koreans would be excited to see some of their home grown music acts getting press in the States.
Man some people here will critisize anything. Makes you wonder what's going on in their personal life.
I meann, who's the real loser(s)? |

The people who keep starting and replying to threads like this all harbor secret fantasies of being on television or being famous, a disorder which arose from being thrust into semi-celebrity status as an expat/teacher-cum-rock star.
When they see some poor Korean teenage girls making manufactured music that they find lame becoming popular and famous in America, envy rears its ugly head. These same teachers now turn into vicious haters of said group (or in Korean palance, 'anti-fans' or 'anti's).
Without Korean speaking or writing ability they have nowhere to release their pent up frustration (i.e. a Daum cafe for anti's). so they have to go on ESLcafe and start threads like this. |

you gotta be kidding, or you are as delusional as the korean media hype
--------
the habit plenty of koreans exhibit, of seeing what they do as #1, of overinflating themselves, the false sense of grandeur, the pompous arrogant condescending attitude often exhibited... the belief that Rain is world famous, the now developing self-perception that WonderGirls are taking America by storm and are great and popular there, is one big lie feeding the nationalistic ego of so many in this country
that is what it's all about
The girls themselves are of course wished the best of luck, but the media and societal hype, the twisting of every little thing into a perception of superiority, that makes them a sensation beyond their merits
they ain't no gold medal winning figure skater
they are second-rate singers performing unoriginal music as a backup band, an opening act that is a sidenote, a footnote, on the musical tour they are a part of, and are being interviewed by a brand new show that began airing just last week so in all likelihood has one of the lowest ratings on tv and certainly is no evidence of their greatness or popularity or anything deserving of a story about
my students already think the Wondergirls are famous in America. i don't educate them on that matter. i let them live in their illusions. coming on dave's is a harmless way of speaking the truth as one sees it, a place to call a spade a spade and *beep* *beep* without hurting Korean egos, or at least, dave's used to be such a place - less so these days |

they are HUGE actually.. bigger than HANSON ever was..

true, they got three nights at the STAPLES Center in LA (how many 2nd generation L.A. Koreans will go to those concerts?) and a night at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, then the tour's over
still time to become famous and popular in america |
