Gang,

I thought I've tried all the downloads, but nothing is working....there must be something I'm missing...

I'd like to be able to type in Korean on my English XP version. I can read Korean, but not write. I downloaded several language packs (and installed) from Microsoft's site, but nits-fer-bits.

Also, how about the same thing for Word? Actually, I can't even read Korean on that either.

Any help?

This is an often covered topic .... get the Microsoft IME package. You can search for it on the net as well as the forum here, not to mention the MS web site ... it will install the necessary items so you can switch between keyboard input and language formats. In addition go to the Regional Settings of the Control Panel and look ... you'll see how to get what you want ..... it's easily resolved

Basically, the "download the IME" thing doesn't apply if you're using Windows XP.

Additionally if you want to install korean language software, then you should change the unicode box to Korean otherwise Korean programs will display in gibberish. I discovered this after the software that came with my web cam didn't have English.

I was able to type in Korean on my English Windows XP until last week. Now it only works on MSN Messenger, but not in MS Word....why?

I just did a fresh o/s install and switched from a hangul to an english keyboard (no more han-young/hanja shortcut keys Sad

) so I also had a few intial moments where I couldn't seem to get it to work even though I've been doing it for years. I didn't bother to check the links in this thread so apologies if this is already covered:

First, do you have the language toolbar on your taskbar? If you do you should see a blue 'en' button next to the system tray. If you don't then right click on the taskbar and select toolbars -> language.

Right click the 'en' button- do you have an option for 'ko'? If yes go to the next paragraph, if no- right click the 'en' button and select 'settings'. Add Korean in the pop up window.

I had done all of the above regualrly before but this time I had a problem-
I don't know if it's the keyboard change or what but the language switch wasn't instananeous like it used to be, I had to wait a few secs for it to switch to 'ko'. Then I found I couldn't type in Korean. After a bit of head scratching it turned out that because the taskbar was locked the neccessary icons you have to click were hidden- I had to right click and unlock the taskbar and slide the language bar to the right by about an inch. Now when I click on the 'ko' button I can see the blue-red Korean aum-yang telling me the IME is active and next to it is a white 'A' and next to that is a white hanja icon. Clicking on the 'A' will change it to a '��' or 'ga' telling me we're ready to roll. Highlighting a Korean character or word and then hitting the hanja icon will open up a list of hanja characters to substitute- ��.

There are a couple of things to remember- you have to have the cursor active in a field where you are able to type- e.g. a Word document or a message field in IE (such as the message box for posting on Dave's; if you try this on the desktop you're not going to get anything- the IME only becomes active when you're at a place you can use it).

And for Internet Explorer you also have to make sure the encoding is set to Korean. For this reason I've added the encoding icon to my IE toolbar (right click the toolbar with all the IE icons and select 'customize' then add the encoding icon, you can also find the encoding by clicking on the 'view' drop-down menu). I find the encoding is often jumpy and will switch back to the default at the most inconvenient times Mad

, so if you're having trouble and you don't know why check the encoding again.

If you DO have to change your encoding again make sure you highlight and copy the Korean you just wrote- sometimes (e.g. while posting at Dave's) changing the encoding will refresh the window to a blank where your message used to be Mad

Thanks all for trying to help. I realised that the keyboard icon on the tool bar was hidden. I had to click on that and go through additional steps to get it to work....never had this problem on past English XP versions...hmmm.

all is well...

if u have windows xp do this:
start > control panel > language/region > east asian languages > install.

it's like 230MB or something like that.
then after that there will be a box where u can click the languages that you would want to type in. also click to "show language bar", then u can move it down to the tool bar in a convient position.

if you have windows 2000 i believe it's the same process.
