Woh, woh, settle down now. He made a valid point. We treat our meat animals like absolute rubbish (is that how you brits use it?). |
Oh sure. This ranks up there with his 'you can't complain about smokers if you drive a car' argument. The kids on a roll! |
well, thats a good point. What a terrible argument this guy had made :\ |

I agree that the treatment of animals at amusement parks and zoos here in Korea is quite bad compare to the West.
But I wonder if the same people critisizing the Korean lady's actions also eats beef, pork and especially chicken.
The treatment many of those animals go through is far far worse than what we saw on the video.
Hey I'm certainly not a vegetarian, so I'm not about to call anyone out. But aren't we all hypocrits? |
you make a valid point..
but That bear was born in captivity in a zoo and that means that EVerLAnd has a responsibility to take care of it! not tease it and tramatize it for laughs on television... THE zoo keeper should not have done that for television.. Im guessing that the director wanted something funny for his boring tv show. so he told the young girl to do it.. she being stupid and young did what the Ajossi PD said.. where she should have told him "NO, Im sorry this bear is a baby and is away from its mother we can't scare the bear by putting him into the lions pen for entertainment! Im sorry..
Zoo Keepers, veterinarian etc = love for animals!
still not as bad as the Russians who use baby bears to make money for them .. |

In very grudging defense of the zookeeper, as others have pointed out this bear was an orphan and the exposure to the lion cubs was a form of "socialization" for it. Just why it needs this kind of socialization with the lion cubs is still unclear. Perhaps later on the Everland officials are planning to dress the bear up in a little cowboy outfit and have him ride around on the back of one of his lion cub "hyunngnims" .
All in all, Everland seems a bit shit really. And Itaewon guy, you're right, she should have told the ajosshi PD to bugger off, or at least show this scene in a sympathetic and serious way - ie, no laughter and voiceovers. |

To all the idiots making comparisons to this behavior and food consumption: you are an idiot.
If you can't differentiate between sadistic behavior for the purposes of entertainment and the attempt to mass-produce food for the purposes of consumption and profit, then, well, perhaps Korean media is on to something about us foreign teachers. Good job, for all of our complaints about maltreatment at their hands, they were right.
I'm not condoning the treatment of our food-animals. Indeed, it's deplorable. However, to raise this point when the issue here is clearly about entertainment is a looming strawman. To answer your question, endo, no, we're not all "hypocrits."
And to the guy who laughed when he saw a kid run up and kick a pigeon. Yeah. That's not sadistic at all.
Get your heads out of your asses. |

| Waly too many darn apologists on this board. You point out something wrong with Korea or Koreans and all of a sudden you get labelled a racist or your points are invalid because of something that happens elsewhere. |

The whole food industry argument is just a joke. If Koreans were all vegetarians and this video was the ONLY foul play they committed against animals, alright, fair play, we "Western meat mongers" are to bear the shame. But that obviously isn't the case. Hell, when I lived in Korea, most Koreans probably ate more meat than I do. I don't particularly like pork and I can't afford beef everyday.
Apples and oranges. Tell me when Korea becomes a vegetarian society, where one's status isn't judged by how many times a week you eat galbi, then I'll tell people they're overreacting to this video.
Enjoy your dog soup, apologists. |

With such a sensationalist heading, I was quite disappointed with the so called "abuse". Harden up, this is Asia. They treat animals differently here which even though I really don't like, it's how it is.
The Korean sense of humour leaves a bit to be desired too, I mean, I watched a show where some guy was throwing bags of cement on top of each other and that was passed off as comedy.
Point your animal rights fingers at say the Russians or the Chinese and you might get some more sympathy.
The Koreans might call us "shocking" too for the way we stuff our old people in homes and let them rot which I think is much worse than getting cheap laughs from a cub being tormented a little. |

Granted, I too was suspecting a bit more in the video given the "shocking" headline, but the rest of your post is nonsense. You folks love the strawmen arguments, don't you? Look, we're talking about behavior for the purposes of entertainment. If you're going to engage in relativism, then at least pick a Western activity that's in the same field.
And about your comment about old people:
Right, because old people in Korea are afforded every luxury and all their needs are taken care of. You never, ever see old folks passed out in the street or hunched over doing manual labor looking half-starved.
I understand the sentiment of not really liking it and putting up with it, but nevertheless I don't think it's being imperialistic to argue that they really should change it, or even be an activist toward such a goal. And, unlikely as it sounds, posting that kind of garbage on Dave's is actually an act of activism, and I'm all for it. Exposure is a good thing. And, we all know Koreans read some of this stuff (but probably tire before hitting the 4th page mark). If they read about how in the West, according to the DSM, intentional cruelty to animals is a hallmark of sociopaths, then gradually things will change. One would hope. |

LOL.
@Itaewonguy: Your logic has always been messed up. If you think seeing a kid kick a bird and a shark eat a kid is the same thing, maybe it is time you went back to your shrink.
@VanIslander: me, an apologist? I don't think so. I just have a sense of humor and I am not an animal lover. I would have laughed had I seen that in any country. If it was my own child that had kicked the bird, I'd be a little proud on the speed factor, but I would be more worried the bird might have attacked her. Yes, you read right, I wouldn't be worried about the bird's safety. As I said, I am not an animal lover and I think they have WAY too many rights.
I haven't commented on the zoo factor because I don't care either way. |

Their is a huge chasm between animal treatment in the west vs the east. Yes, animal cruelty occurs everywhere. However, the difference being, in the west there are consequences and repercussions. For example, say, in the US, should protesters pull live pigs in half in public, they'd be arrested, tried, and sent to jail. Another example might be taking live doves and smashing their heads with hammers.
Should this happen in the west, again, arrested, tried, convicted. Look at Michael Vick who just served years in prison for dog fighting and shooting unproductive dogs. In Korean it's called tenderizing for virility... Any zoo, food processor etc that is caught abusing animals is held accountable. This cannot be said for many countries, particularly in Asia. |

Anyone remember when Dave Windfield threw a baseball at a seagull and killed it? He was arrested.
Toronto fans taunted him for years until he came to play for the Jays. |

Your avatar doesn't match your quote at all.
Unless, the avatar is ironic.
In that case, oh.
Man this video is hard to watch. How could you NOT feel sorry for the bear in that situation?
And who could find that funny?
How about putting a baby in a room with alligators? Ahhh, hilarious. |
