Why am I being asked to sign a letter of resignation, when all I'm doing is not renewing? Is this normal?

This is the template I was given:

Quote:
Dear Mr. ***

It is with regret that I wish to inform you of my resignation, this day of ******.
I have found my time here in Korea to be a very valuable experience, and I wish to express my appreciation and high esteem to you and teachers. I feel those teachers I have been in cotact with have done their best to ensure that the foreign assistant teacher's stay in Korea is a rewarding and memorable one. This has been the case for myself personally, and I wish to inform you that I leave for purely personal reasons; not as a result of any fault or oversight of the school.

Is this a formality? Is this normal? I wouldn't even ask, except there has been some confusion here about my contract's end-date. I had a verbal agreement to end early, but now I'm not, and I've had a couple different contracts with different terminations on them. It's a long story.

I think people are going to need more information than that.

---Are you leaving early?

---Does the letter of resignation include any reasons for not re-signing?

---What is the school's stated reason for requesting such a letter?

---Are you 100% positive that they absolutely understood you and that there is no chance of a misunderstanding occurring here?

---A bit of background (to put the situation in context) would also be helpful.

But for what it's worth, I never had to provide a letter of resignation for my P.S job.

EDIT: I wrote this post before I saw your second one. In that case I think it might be mostly attributable to number 4.

Maybe this is a 'polite' way of saying they want to get rid of you? Laughing

Hopefully they are just confused. Hopefully they are not trying to be malicious and assume you are foolish enough to sign something that would easily be used as proof to deny you severance pay and your return plane ticket.

Well, a couple weeks ago they said it was because I wanted to leave early. Then when we cleared that up, and I decided not to leave early (because doing so I would forfeit my bonus), they stopped talking about it. In fact we agreed that I would stay a week longer (ie, 365 days + 7) for overtime pay.. Then today they decided they want me to sign it after all, and disturbingly it has the original, early termination date on it.

Does that make sense?

No. I'll double check

Okay, thanks.

This is what I'm worried about, but it's a public school, if that means anything these days, and they've been open and trustworthy so far.

So in your opinion I shouldn't sign it.

I'd very kindly ask for my bonus and ticket up front before signing that.

Well yes because if you signed that letter, you would be leaving early, hence the need for a resignation letter.

As for staying a week longer for OT pay...you will have to clear that with Immigration first (if you are on an E-2 visa).

Your best bet would be to sit down with the school officials again and try to work something out that you both can live with. Make it very clear that you would prefer to work here until the end of the contract.

Save ANY mention of the labor board for a "nuclear option" (if all else fails, and they say you must leave early). In that case then tell them very calmly and professionally that you will be taking this up with the labor board. Again I do not advise mentioning the labor board until all other options for a peaceful solution have been exhausted...it kind of pushes them into a corner where they then feel they have to save face by getting you out.

I just can't imagine that they would try to screw me out of several thousand dollars.

Have you ever been asked to do this?

Never. Why would I sign such a document unless I were quitting? I've never quit. I've always fulfilled my contract. I didn't choose to renew, but that isn't the same as quitting when you are working on a 12 month contract.

Just to clear something up: the agreement to terminate early was made last summer, before they ever hired me. I never considered it quitting.

I'm finished my 2nd year at my public school in September and not staying. My school (a GEPIK one) just gave me a resignation letter for me to sign and give to them. My wife had to do the same last year when she finished at her first GEPIK school.

I have no idea why they need once since we aren't actually resigning. Anyways, I plan to sign it my last day and date it then and give it to them as I'm leaving. Though if they want it before I'll probably give it to them. I think they just need something on file for some weird reason. My wife signed hers last year and got all her money from the school just fine.

Thank you, that's reassuring. I haven't had a chance yet to speak with the office.
