I'm saddened to read of this.
My uncle was a Fulbright Scholar at UCLA in 1969/70 and has only fond memories of fellow researchers and the quality of the Californian public university system.
I hope Sacramento can sort out the financial mess but as many say it appears to be impossible.

I'm not going to bother arguing with a pothead.

Mises reminded YTB:

Whatever you want to feel about this, it isn't sustainable in a welfare state.

He'd rather feel than think. He's part of the James Brown "I Feel Good" bandwagon that's hit Washington.

Illegals pay into social security but never receive it, and there are many services which they do not apply for. That ought to more than offset the cost of the bilingual program.

On the wages they earn, they're not paying as much as those programs costs. And you're forgetting their other classroom costs, not to mention free lunches, and health care. It doesn't balance out as you wishfully think.

I think the opening of the Merced campus was a mistake.

It is the newest UC system campus designed for the underserved and mostly Latino upper central region. But just because one science college at one university hasn't paid its freight doesn't negate my charge for the other dozen in the system.

We're not as left-wing here as you think

Oh, I know there are pockets of sanity left but the Dems rule the roost. It's the same in Hawaii, bruddah. The Dems have always held legislative power power there. And you're right, the Clinton feds undid Prop 187.

Well played Sir!! Yes, you're automatically correct because you've never smoked weed. And you don't even know whether I have! Good argument. But, I suppose you prefer alchohol that kills thousands and thousands every year.

And the cost of doing nothing? Argue against illigal immigaration, fine. But don't ignore the social and economics costs of doing nothing - prison system, justice system, healthcare....
