Two pretty average sides having a go at each other.

Five poor umpiring decisions and some poor shot selections added to this loss, let's hope things even out over the series.

I'll admit the Aussie cricket side has been chock full of bogans and non-gentlemanly types for many years but in general I don't think they are cynical cheats like Strauss. He's doing everything to win, and I mean everything. Seems he's using the tough guy approach to unsettle the guys and will appeal for everything.

I'd have to say one pretty average side getting beaten by a side that batted well and bowled consistently well.

England were better in the field and had the momentum since the first session. Yes some of the decisions were wrong but then the decision to give Bopara out Lbw in the first test was also wrong. Did the decisons affect the out come of the match? We will never know, but over the 5 days England were the better cricketing side and deserved to win

Bugger, the first day is looking to be a washout!

And Watson as an opener?? What are the selectors smoking. Well, since Merv is a selector I'm sure it's a case of one tin of VB too many.

Me gets a bad feeling about this series. Washouts and dead pitches.

1-1 going into the final test. Nicely poised. Let's just hope England can get Flintoff back to try and make the game as even and exciting as possible.
As for the umpiring decisions complained about in this thread, it's all swings and roundabouts, for example in the match just finished M.Clarke was blatantly out when on just a handful of runs (eventually went on to make 92) and in England's 2nd innings Swann wasn't out, Bopara wasn't out (also Onions wasn't out in the 1st innings).

I think technology will have to come in to the game at some stage as there are so many 'fake' scorecards because of bad decisions not to mention the relative seriousness of it all (e.g.- the 'first ball duck' for Bopara could end his test career).

I think the referral system is a good idea.

Bad umpiring usually evens itself out over a 5 match series. Australia got a few lucky ones this time but that doesn't make up for Rudi's appalling effort in the 2nd test. I do agree on a referral system though.

No Freddie, no England, that's easy to see. No aggressive fast bowler to unsettle the Aussies apart from Harmison who only seems to bowl well on the odd occasion now.

The pitch helped, but the Aussie fast bowlers seemed to have got their line back, especially Johnson and that was a masterstroke putting Clark back in, someone with experience and who can bowl tightly.

Can England bounce back from such a feeble and spineless display? I hope not, and I also hope they don't change their horrid middle order.

Bring on the final test!

It all comes down to the final test. An England must-win to regain the Ashes. I do hope so.
