I have friends who've lived in the philipins and say it's so much better than Thailand...I'm thinking of hitting up Cebu....any thoughts? I'll be visiting Burma later this year aswell, so I guess I'll get the south east asian experience anyway. |

cebu is a drity city! its not the paradise of the philipines..
then again I don't know what it is you are after...
regarding burma, I have backpacked through there..
and its AWESOME!!!
but.. its very different to cambodia and thailand.. NOTHING LIKE IT...
make sure you go to.. Ille lake and bagan.. actually best to do the hike from Kalaw down to illel ake.. its 1 night 2 days and you sleep in a buddhist monestery in the middle of the mountains... unreal... |

if you like buying your girlfriend wherever you go - philippines
if you prefer to avoid the scumbags who purchase women - thailand
just avoid patpong, pattaya, phuket or koh samui.
thailand is also a lot simpler to travel around.
if you like diving, coron or tubetaha (sp?) in philippines are excellent. try and avoid setting foot on shore though.
living somewhere means you can see the charms of a place more than someone just passing through as a tourist. not having lived in either and having been a toursit in both i'd say go to thailand. |

My gut reaction is that Thailand is a little more tourist-friendly but the Philippines feels a little more authentic. I like going to Thailand for a short holiday because I know it will be easy to get around and there will be familiar restaurants and western amenities, and the beaches are wonderful -- my favorite is still those in Phuket. I do find Thailand relatively pricey in places.
I have not been to Cebu yet, but I have been to Boracay. Gorgeous sunsets and a very cozy, walkable little island, although getting around is harder as the roads are awful. The Philippines tend to be cheaper than Thailand and the locals definitely seem nicer and less jaded by tourists. There is not the nightlife you would find in a place like Bali, but you may not want that anyway.

Slight hijack. I'm going to southern Thailand for the next couple of weeks. Has anyone gone there in July/August? What's the weather like? I have found a lot of conflicting reviews. Some say it rains all the time. Some say it's two days on, two days off. Some say it rains half of each day. Anyone know from experience? |

Went to Bantayan Island, Philippines last winter for a week. Small island in the Cebu province of about 100 000 people in 3 small towns. Loved it, and you wouldnt believe how cheap everything was! Want to go back this summer, but I havent been to Thailnad, so I guess Ill go there this time. |

Filipinos in my experience are more openly friendly than Thais, and the Phils is still largely undiscovered whereas Thailand is one big tourist trap (but I like Thailand, too, just prefer to hit the Phils). |

I was in Phuket last August. It rarely rained, but when it did it would be for a relatively short burst in the afternoon. Then the skies would be sunny again. |

Just read a few long threads on Thailand vs. the Phils. It seems Thailand is more fun and interesting, has much better cuisine, and boasts cheaper accommodation is safer and more developed, and has less hassle from street beggars and such. What the Phils has going for it is great beaches, so much undiscovered stuff to explore, friendlier people, English, great cover bands and cheaper booze.
I will hit Thailand on my next vacation (or Bali) but well, I don't regret hitting the Phils four times this year. |
