Much people speak that Korea is a dirty place. Why is this? I've been all over the world and if you think it's dirty, you should go to India, China, Sri Lanka..... I find it to be very clean which makes it a much more desirable place to experience.

Probably because they're comparing it to Japan.

Because most ESL teachers in Korea have had little or no travel experience in developing countries. Many are fresh out of college so they are comparing it to their home country. Honestly, many ESL teachers in Korea i've met are still really naive about the world.

But also, Korea is somewhat dirty. I just traveled around South America and most of the towns and cities I saw there were cleaner than Korea, even though these are much poorer countries.

But compared to the rest of Asia, Korea is not too bad.

I find Seoul quite clean, especially considering how massive and crowded it is. It's ugly, but not dirty.

Compared to the typical American urban environment, it is CLEAN.

Also there is a lot of trash around, but it's safe. No crime. The rural areas are run down because only old people live there and everyone wants to move to the city - there is no "suburbanization"

The lack of trash cans makes it so everyone just litters. In Busan, it is really bad, garbage filling the sidewalks. They need to just put garbage cans all over like the US or British do. Korea is a wealthy enough country.

You take the garbage cans off the streets, and people litter everywhere, surprise, surprise.

Also, there's the fact that there's basically some kind of stench no matter where in the city you are.

I think Korea's pretty clean considering the population density though. But it definitely varies. Look at Gangnam, then look at Youngdeungpo...

Yeah, Korea doesn't seem very good at cleaning up their trash from what I've seen. If they could deal with that, it would help a lot!

Korea is dirty (how could it be other wise - with all it's annual rainfall falling in one short rainy season). However, Koreans do try and clean up. Everyday I see shopkeepers cleaning, scrubbing outside their shops etc.

But, for a country that seeks first world status, I still can't believe there's no organised trash collection system. This place stinks of garbage - especially in the summer heat. And why do Koreans just throw garbage everywhere? Even in the mountains (or at the river), they just leave their dirty plates, paper cups, wooden chopsticks, food scraps, soju bottles etc. YUK!

I sense that what you are describing is a bad dream from the past when you were in India. Sounds the same to me.
