We're coming to Korea for 2 months--a vacation, not working this time. I don't want to get cash from my credit card while I'm there because they charge interest on cash from day one. I don't want to carry huge wads of cash. I remember that a lot of places don't deal with cards so we paid mostly in cash. Has that changed in 3 years? Can we cash US travelers checks at a bank?
Advice greatly appreciated.

The banks will cash travelers checks. Bring US Dollars to Korea; you'll get a better exchange rate when converting to KRW in Korea. The larger bank branches in Seoul have international ATMs that you can withdraw cash from your foreign account at. As for where to exchange your money...Hotels give the worst exchange rate, followed by the banks, the airport is slightly better, and the regulated exchange booths in Itaewon and Myeong-dong are the best. (I don't trust the adjummas with the cardboard boxes in Namdaemun.) Also, if your check card or credit card has the Visa or Master Card logo on it you should be able to use it at most businesses now. |
