South Korea has accomplished a lot in the past two generations, that's true. And hyping up the "miracle" is a good way to get people to work hard; they equate personal success with increasing national prestige.
But, Korea is smaller than Pennsylvania. If Pennsylvania received trillions of dollars of aid over the last two generations, and was allowed to protect its industries, you can be sure that it would have become the Hub of Asia. Calling Korea's development "Miraculous" is shortsighted and unsophisticated, and hopefully people here come to realize how complex that "miracle" was.
Africa . . . well, Africa is Africa. No doubt it deserves more attention from wealthier countries, but it need to get out of its own damn way, first. |

Actually, the biggest difference between Africa and Korea is the fact that America provided stability as well as investment-- Africa has a problem with stability and no one is willing to do anything about it-- so really, the money does nothing.
Anyway, I take issue with the OP's kinds of statements because they come across as arrogant and superior. I really don't know what kind of a reaction she expected by posting this here. So you're proud of some people that you personally have very little to do with?
Someone could have just as easily said that the reason the West has the most economies within the world's top ten is because we are the most hard-working, the smartest, the best, and the strongest. If that's how you're measuring the character of a race, then by your own logic, white people are the best. I could easily say that we came all the way from the dark ages to the modern world, invented industrialization, etc. etc... and whenever we didn't invent something, we thought of the best possible application for it, thereby assuring our dominance as the undisputed military, cultural and economic rulers of this world.
Then you'd have the Korean trolls on the forum piping in about slavery, and plunder and all the nasty things we did to get to the top, as if they're somehow above it... and theirs is a perfect society with no flaws that not only does everything well, they also do it honorably. But that's complete and utter BS.
The truth is that nationalism is completely meaningless-- yet another a propaganda tool used by the rich into getting the masses to do whatever they want... and people who post @#$% about 'their country is the best' and thinking that they are in any way responsible for events that pre-date their own birth are tools of the highest order. It's like rooting for your favorite sports team-- sure it's nice to be there and hear the crowd, but at the end of the day, all you did was sit in your chair and watch.
Decades of Korean propaganda seem to have integrated nationalism and racism into one particularly objectionable package... which anyone with a brain in their head would refuse to accept. I personally refuse to believe it is as widespread as it seems to be on the Internet-- and I'm pretty sure that most Koreans are good people, not mindless nationalist racist drones. |

Korea has had a lot of help over the years-- as somebody already mentioned, Kenya, like the rest of Africa, has been completely ignored by the West |
African countries have received, and continue to receive billions of dollars from the West, yet they have squandered it, largely due to inherent corruption. |
Do you have a source?
Though they do receive some aid, I don't think it's as big as you make it out to be. Also, I'm pretty sure the link between corruption and problems becoming developed are not as visible as you would like to think. There are many other factors keeping several African countries down, including disease, environmental factors and lack of infrastructure.
If you really want to learn more, you could try reading The End of Poverty by Jeffrey Sachs. He looks at the development issues in Africa and paints a fairly clear picture of what is happening, what is being done currently (well a few years ago) and what needs to be done to help Africa to develop.

Certainly, I will not deny there is corruption in Africa, but you're perpetuating a myth that it is the sole cause of problems there.
I agree with the above posters that Korea has come a long way (remember those pictures from 1966 posted recently), but they have had help. And though they were under imperial rule, I doubt the effects have been as disastrous as they have been for Africa. |

Why are Koreans (Miss Seoul included) so fixated on convincing foreigners how great Korea is? Thirty-second in the world is something to trumpet about?
Yes, it is interesting how Korea did so well economically but could they have done it on their own? No. Koreans are just good at doing what someone else has told them to do. I think North Korea has it right when they call South Korea a puppet regime.
Do Koreans work so hard? Not from what I've seen. They just like to give the APPEARANCE of working hard. I see this first hand every day. And they can't organize anything to save their life.
Is the Korean education system so superior? Absolutely not. The education here sucks, from what I've seen. No critical thinking. No original thought. No quality control. Just study for those endless tests but never learn how to think. That's quality education. Why do they have to go to hogwans to learn what they didn't learn in their public schools? That's so unnecessary and favours the rich over the poor. The rich can get ahead the poor stay behind.
This is one of the most annoying things about Koreans, the fact that they trumpet how great they are when really they're nothing all that special.
Korea might be doing pretty well economically, but socially they are light years behind the rest of the world. And they should stop thinking KOREA all the time and think of themselves instead as global citizens. Korea will not be satisfied until they are number one, but why is that so important? Why not help the world be number one? It's so selfish to have these nationalistic attitudes.
And Miss Seoul, it's not hard to figure out that you are Korean. Not sure if you were trying to hide that fact or not, but you're pretty easy to pick out. |

When did Korea fall to 32nd among richest countries? Is this in terms of GDP or PPP? Last I checked, Korea was about 32nd in the world in terms of PPP (the US and Japan are in the teens, I believe) and about 14th richest in terms of GDP. Korea is in the G20, which is comprised of the 20 richest countries in the world, so.... |

I think it was last year when former President Kim Dae Jung made a speech about how great Korea is, and its wonderful dveelopment. It really rubbed me the wrong way.
Yes, they have worked hard. Yes, their development has been miraculous. But to ignore all the help they've been given over the years is nothing short of a slap in the face of those who sacrificed. |

GDP Per Capita, 2008, US Dollars
Luxembourg was at over $113,000
South Korea, in 2008, was at around $20,000, behind the Czech Republic at $21,000. You work it out. |

numbers, numbers, numbers. korea loves to say we are (add number).
Most of the advanced countries are living life, enjoying life, korea must always be looking at numbers. Well, China is coming soon, so I hope they
have enjoyed their little party, soon all the goods will be branded MADE IN CHINA and poor korea will be lost |

OMG is Miss Seoul still allowed to post here?
32th?
32nd
My hard working Korean boss missed taking me to Fukuoka because the evening before he had promised to drive me to Busan... he'd been drinking until 0600... He was still drunk when I came to his house at 0930...
Now, this hard working teacher was promised a salary payment on July 24th and his answer was that "his wife takes care of it"...
I haven't been paid yet |

I wasn't here for a while, my mind was very busy for something else.
Someone has sued me over one of my rental properties and I had to fight back hard.
It didn't go with my way as I wished, but I didn't defeat either, but I am going to lose some money ( about $ 70,000 ).
The property that caused lawsuit is on market right now and as soon as I sell this property I am moving out this town/this State. |
