That's a valid point. The problem is that this awards the big investors, while the smaller backers (in this case the universities in NZ) who nurtured the potential are robbed of credit. This is similar to arguments that emerge between inventors, and investors in patent cases. By coincidence, it is a problem that the inventor of the blue LED had. You make a decent point, but I don't think the distinction bewteen the investors and the nurturers is an easy one to make. Would you agree?

On this subject, again the distinction becomes blurred. Do we credit the big US educators, or the people (in this case his company which put up the scholarship money) who nurtured his potential?

I see Rutherford listed as "United Kingdom and New Zealand", that's not cutting New Zealand out. As I understand it countries are not awarded the prize, it's awarded to a person. This argument is way off the topic now and it's gotten down to fine semantics. Rutherford is a New Zealander, and got his degree in New Zealand. Not to take away from the people who give him opportunities in England, or the support he got, but I think it's pretty mean spirited and pedantic to go from there to saying "New Zealand has not produced a Nobel Laureate".
Incidentally, I went to the same school as him. |

I think a kindergarten and a nationality are somewhat different in terms of importance... but I could be mistaken. And actually, I do mention my elementary school on a far too often basis as I rather enjoyed those years... |
