OK, well, this word used to mean a lot to me before entering this "profession." But I gotta tell ya, the word has lost all of its meaning.
This is not to bash what I or you do for a living, but let's be honest. Don't you just cringe slightly when you refer to yourself as a teacher?
I mean, my vision of a teacher is of my second grade teacher Mrs. Read helping with my multiplication as well as soothing me when I was angry, meeting my mom at PTAs, and handing out the all important report card.
When I see the two words together "English Teacher" I get a lump in my stomach. It's kinda like a euphemism for something else. I don't know what we should call it, but certainly not teacher.
ESL instructor? English facilitator? Anything but the word teacher. What I and you do is certainly nothing in the realm of what a teacher means to me. |
Are you Korean? Seems to be a huge tirade against us lately and vieled attempts to critize all westerners in the country. |
Are you white? |

How is it criticism?
I have to agree. We are tutors. Certainly not teachers. |

we could call ourselves "fried zucchini", for all the uri-nara cares...but the Koreans will always consider us monkeys for their entertainment.
You could have a PhD, 20 years experience teaching in the west, or even be a tenured professor in the west.
Here you are still the performing monkey. |

You can't be qualified unless you are Korean. Even if you have a PhD in linguistics, MA TESOL, and k-12 certification, you still would be considered unqualified and your input would be disregarded as rantings of an inferior simpleton. |
Wrong. You might not be a certified teacher within Korea (though I think if your Korean skills are good enough and you are certified from Canada you should be able to get certified as we have an agreement with Korea on that front..), but as for the word QUALIFIED, examine what that means.
Not all Koreans live in a shoebox where they will dismiss what you know or think. I find jobs where I am treated with respect and expected to be a professional who knows how and what to teach. If you have one of the above qualifications and you are not being respected, change jobs.
I'm not an apologist for Korean behavior, but you should also realize there are ignorant bosses in your home country as well that would think you don't know enough despite having super credentials. |

Best and most accurate post in the thread...although YF pretty much hit the nail on the head as well. |

I smell fish coming from your direction. Freakin douche. |
Grammar, by definition, doesn't encompass spelling. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/grammar
I wasn't sure. I'll consider this my professional development for the week. |
How ironic. |

perhaps you are a hogwonner, but I am a university monkey. The issue has nothing do with being liked, respected, or appreciated. The issue is a difference of about 50 thousand dollars in income for a tenured Korean versus a foreign monkey. there are no universities in the country that grant tenure to foreign monkeys, no matter their degrees, experience and achievements.
The ignornace of the boss has nothing to with the fact that immigration law clearly states that foreigners are not allowed tenure at public universities, thus private universities do not give it either. |

You're a professor here because you couldn't be a professor in your home country. And who cares, right? But you complain way too much. Just do your job and collect your pay, Professor. |

ladies and gentlemen, exhibit A:
-all foreigners are stupid. (otherwise why are they here?)
-if monkey doesnt like korea, monkey: go home.
classic apologism at its best. I rest my case. |
