Yes, yes, this is a Wonderland thread. I'm aware that everyone may think I'm a big stupid, and it very well may be that I am.

I just had an interview with Wonderland in Gangnam. I fully expected to blow it off as I've heard the bad reputation. However, the interviewer surprised me by actually addressing the bad reputation. He said this particular school is trying to distance itself from Wonderland, and in fact is not actually in the chain (or something close to that). Meaning the teachers at this school don't have to attend the bi-monthly wonderland conferances etc etc.

It still is a standard Hagwon with long hours and kindy, my options are running thin and I'm wondering if anyone has experience with the school. If it's not a hellish Wonderland, it may be a decent deal. I mean, at the very least, I'd be living in Gangnam.

I'll avoid making any snarky remark as I was expecting cynicism and I would probably be doing the same thing in your place, really.

However, Wonderland is a large chain and bad experiences at one don't necessarily imply bad experiences at another. If I can find someone with experience at this branch, I'd be very happy.

No harm in exploring every option.

Here's one way to notice they're "trying to distance themselves from the others": they sever their ties with the franchise.

Until they change their name to something other than Wonderland, they're still a Wonderland franchise. The interviewer was placating you in hopes that you'll be foolish enough to sign a contract into slavery.

"Everybody smiles at Wonderland." - except the poor sods who have to teach there.

If they are aware of the bad rep, they won't mind you talking to past and present teachers, getting photos of your housing, and negotiating for a better contract. Be careful, but also be aware that (imho) 99% of people who slag of Wonderland have never actually worked for them, or even know anyone who has. They are just jumping on the bandwagon.

Hahaha, nevermind. Turns out Wonderland doesn't want me afterall. The interview went great. The foreigner who I spoke with said I would make a great addition to the team etc etc, but then my recruiter told me the school declined because they wanted a more energetic person....


Perhaps going into an interview with the assumption that it's a bad school isn't the most helpful, haha

Or perhaps the foreigner I interviewed with also browses these forums
