I am at the point where I REALLY need a new computer but will not be able to afford to get one until I have been in Korea at least a few months. Is it possible to get a new computer over there that has Windows using English? Are there decent companies that would actually ship it to me if I bought online - Dell, HP, etc? Or would it be better to have it shipped to my parents and have them then ship the new computer to me? Just wondering in general how best to go about getting myself a good laptop once I'm over there where it actually uses English. Thanks.

I suggest Dell. I bght one last year with english OS. You can order online
(korean website) or call them for a bank account to transfer money. The will send the computer to you korean address. Its very peaceful.

Only problem is I am American and I can't read Korean. I know HP also has a Korean website but there you run into the same problem.

I had the same problem. I emailed DELL (using the address on their website) and they contacted me back. Then I told them about the configuration I needed. I transferred money to the account number they provided. After that, they shipped.

You may also consider taking help from a Korean colleague. Using the website also requires you to have a Credit Card. So, the best way it to email them and let them contact you back in English.

My experience with Dell Korea was very nice. For the troubles I took with their Korean, they gave me a good mouse and speakers for free.

That sounds good. I bought a Korean computer with Korean Windows, to force me to learn this language. It worked. But it's also a little annoying with the complex stuff.

I've been working on a laptop that crashes at random for so bloody long now it's nuts. I want to buy myself my dream laptop with EVERYTHING I could want on it state of the art. Might cost a lot but I don't have a car or anything so this is my main purchase. So, you're saying go to their US website first and get the config I want all settled out and then email that to them and let them help me put the order all together. What sort of experiences has anyone had with HP?

no, i meant email to Dell Korea. they have a couple of sales agents who know english. they emailed and contacted me after receiving my email.

you can choose a configuration on Dell Korea website. though its in korean, its not hard. but you can also choose on Dell US and email it to the agent. once you get in touch with an english speaking agent, its very easy.

Well, I know for certain I want a Dell Alienware with all the fixings so, yeah. Also, does the laptop have to be paid for all at once with a bank draft or is it possible to do a payment plan?

Ihave bght 3 dell machines over the past few years and all are great. I paid for the machine in full using a bank transfer via ATM. I do not know if you can avail a long-term scheme or not. Maybe you should ask Dell about it. I think its a bit hard but I am not sure.

I think I'll probably end up buying the laptop at the US website. I did a build at both and there's less options for more money at the Korean website. Not sure why. Probably still email them though and see if they can build me a machine to the US build's specs. If not I'll buy and have it shipped to my parents and then to me. Are there any customs precautions I should take to make sure the laptop gets to me safely without getting stolen? Would customs try and confiscate it or something? Just curious and making plans.

If you can afford it, but something at home and bring it. Low-wend models are cheaper in the USA than in Korea.

Otherwise, are you against buying a desktop in Korea? They can be had more cheaply. You can buy a used desktop in Yongsan that will be good enough for about whatever you need to do and spend around under 300,000 including the monitor. You might even be able to get the store to install English OS for you.

Just sell the thing off when you leave.

I'm actually going more towards the HIGH end laptop. Been making do with lower end and a laptop restarting like mad on me and i am finally going all out and buying myself a dream gaming laptop. But buying a cheap used lowend desktop til I can afford the new one is actually a halfway decent idea! How much do they usually cost on average?

Oops. 300,000 won. Thanks. That's actually a really good idea! I'll probably do that ASAP after I get my first paycheck. Heh. That'll at least give me something to work on while saving up for the big sucker. My laptop has been on its last legs for a half year now.

I don't do LAN games as much. I do other stuff and I want a high end PC that is portable. I'll get a cheap desktop to tide me over til I can afford what I want but I'll be getting it.
