For the Korean new year I went to Muju, which was pretty wicked cause there were no dreaded lift lines that I heard so much about. Also the conditions were great; good snow coverage and almost no ice.
Because of that I went again last weekend and it was a different story this time. The place was PACKED to the t*ts! An easy 20 minute wait for most lines also the mountian was an obstacle course littered with the bodies of so called "pro-skiers/riders". Needless to say it was a bit less cool, but still was great to be out.
The question is does anyone know of other places that have decent runs and are maybe not too crowed. Also for those vets out here, how long does the season last, I heard different things from my fellow korean teachers.
Thanks. |

Did you also go to Muju, cause I wouldn't mind knowing if there are other places that are worth a visit. |

Lesson 1:
If you go ANYWHERE remotely FUN on a weekend, a sh*tload of Koreans also got the same idea and will be there too.
Lesson 2:
If you go ANYWHERE remotely FUN during Chu-sok or Chinese NY, tons of Koreans WANT to be there, but they put their tail between their legs and head to their hometowns. Hence you can actually have FUN. I hear Carribian Bay is great at chusok (sept chusok that is). |

Yeah, Muju can be packed at certain times. Avoid Saturday!
Usually Friday evening and Sunday evening are the best times
to beat the crowds. If you don't mind being cold then go to the
slopes on the very top of the mountain. If you hang out up there
then the lines are short. |

I live in Gangwon-do, so I always go to Yongpyong (2010 Winter Olypics candidate). It's a nice size, but it's also busy. There is a half-pipe and quarter-pipe for more experienced boarders. If you have a 016 phone, a couple runs are free for night boarding (6:30-10pm) on Fridays and Saturdays. Add another 15,200 won, and you can board the rest of the runs during that time. Foreigners also get 20% off lift tickets anyday, anytime.
There's a foreigner's "festival" there during Valentine's weekend. I went last year and didn't do too much with the foreigners, but remembered there was a reception with lots of free stuff... including free beer!

Anyone know about when Yongpyong closes for the off season?
Thought about going there a few times. |
