I bought an I-pod touch yesterday, and I really like it, but I had no idea that CNN and other sites would block it from service due to "unavailability" or "paid service" requests where a netbook wouldn't have the same issues.

It also can't do anything flash, or play many videos online. Youtube works fine, but other sites seem to have issues. Vimeo, for example, relies on Flash for video... those don't work.

Any help or suggestions?

You're out of luck for Flash based video. That has been a major issue with Apple and Adobe.

Apple won't allow Flash because Flash would make the Appstore moot and pointless. Why download games/movies/tv shows when you can just paly flash based games, and flash video?

Don't count on Apple supporting Flash in the near future.

As for cnn and other sites. download a news app.

I think the real reason why flash isn't supported is because it's such a processor hog. Also flash games usually require some keyboard interaction, which wouldn't be possible with the iPod touch/iPhone.

I think flash support will come in time. I can also see support for advanced CSS animation coming too, as illustrated here:

http://www.macrumors.com/2009/07/13/3d-css-effects-in-snow-leopard-safari-and-more-on-future-of-video-and-flash/

CNN blocks access from mobile phones in Asia for some reason. There's a great app in the app store that supports CNN though. It's called CNN RSS, and it's free. It loads the full article pages just as they would look in the web browser too.

But yes, not being able to use vimeo and other flash-based video sites sucks. Luckily YouTube has a great selection.

Here's a list of my KEY apps that I have:

KorSubway (Seoul subway system. There's a free version. The pay version for $1.99 can calculate trip times between stations and give you details on how to get there (transfers etc).

Scrabble (Scrabble game for iPhone/iPod touch. Awesome game. I've spent countless hours in this game on the subway)

Google App (It's awesome. Just check it out)

Google Earth (Great replacement for Maps, really flashy and cool interface too)

Those are some of the ones I use. I hope you jailbroke yours. If so you can download tons of free apps and games. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a PM.

I second what ppcg4 said about flash and apps.

The iTouch does have some basic limitations, but once you learn the work around or basic compromises I think the overall experience and portability is hard to beat. Having a device that small comparable to an netbook is amazing.

Other apps that I always recommend:

NY Times news app
AP News App
Fluent News
Dictionary (the free one)
Daum Maps
Stanza
myLite
facebook
wordwarp
checkers
lightbike
ihandy level
lux touch (strategy game that is very addictive)
iChess
skype
paper toss
VLC remote free
VNC (Free version: can control your computer with basic functions)

These are just some good starter apps. There are many more that suit ones own personal preference. But you can basically do anything on your itouch that you can with a basic computer, there are work arounds to watching flashbased video, but typically they are not worth it.

Enjoy!

I've been having a heap of fun with the free demo of Ragdoll Lite. That's just fun. Give it a try.

Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't jailbroken it. I have enough free applications to keep me busy for as much time as I have in the day.

Cool I'll check out that game.

Yeah, I agree with you that there are plenty of free quality apps to make jail breaking not necessary at all. I used to have my ipod touch jail broken, but when it's jail broken there is greater instability and a greater chance for you crashing your ipod touch and having to reformat it, which is a pain.

Although for hard core techies whom like rouge software, jail breaking is still cool. Just not super practical for your average user.

Another cool game is "galcon"

I'll check that out.

I was looking all over for an MSN Messenger client, and finally found one off of some little kid's youtube video... ha. It's called IM+ Lite. Couldn't find it via search. It's in the app store under Social Networking somewhere. Works well!
