I have been offered a job in Ansan, near the Jungang station. Anyone have some information about the area? Or lived in Ansan?

Thanks

Hi,

Ansan was pretty cool. I lived there, but it was in 2002. A lot of things going on right at the train station. Bars, shops, noraebang. LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of American type restaurants. All the fast food ones and some other types, like Italian and Vietnamese. Home plus is right down the road from the train station. The buses and taxis were great. The were doing some construction on the "quiet" side of the train station, but I'm sure that's over by now. It's got all the things you need, but if you go a little way from the station, it's nice and quiet.

The only bad thing is if you like to play late at night in Seoul on the weekends. The last train only went half way to Ansan, so if you were on that one, it was like 20 to take the taxi the rest of the way.... I think.

Thank you for the information.

Lots of food choices is always nice. Very Happy Especially the Vietnamese food - I developed a near addiction to it when I was a student in Seattle.

Public transport seems to be rather good then. 20 is not so bad for a taxi ride, I guess. Taxis in Europe have always been overly expensive. I do like a night out on the town, but not chronically, so the price is probably fine.

Good to know that there is a Homeplus in the vicinity.

Ansan

City = ugly

parks = many more than other cities, great for evening walks, strollin with the dog, biking slowly. Hosu Park and Hwarang Park are the biggest.

restaurants = many good local ones, a few good foreign ones at Ansan station - like Nepali, Vietnamese and a few real western restaurants (Outback and TGIF....nothing home made though) a few good Italian restaurants.

Public Trans = good, subway to Seoul = 45min, Taxi from Seoul = 40 to 50,000, and you can get almost anywhere in Ansan for 5,000 won, Buses are never full like they are in Seoul

Theatres = lots

Stores = some department stores, lots of large grocery stores, but poor local markets (go to Ansan Station for cheap markets and foreign goods - not western though, all foreign Asian foods), over all not bad, but going shopping in Anyang or Seoul is much better.

Ocean = near, but not easy to get to. You can take the tube and a bus down to Daebu-do (island) and then a ferry to Deokjeok-do (island) - very nice trip. Technically I live right next to the delta going into the ocean but most of the time I kind of forget just how close it really is.

mountains - We have Suri mountain, good for hiking and biking but easiest to get to from Sanbon in Anyang

Train - nope, but you can hop a bus to Suwon (30 minutes) and catch one there.

Going out = a few western bars, some good Korean style bars (with soju and anju) and some very wack clubs. Go to Seoul for clubbing, sipping a few with friends Ansan is pretty good times but the club scene is non existent.

Sports: We have the Ansan Hallelujah soccer team that plays out of Wa Stadium, but usually the stadium is empty. The biking scene is OK and there are a few clubs that ride out of Suri mountain alot and take trips around the country, climbing = none, there is an outdoor roller hockey rink, some skate parks that never get used, plenty of basketball courts and a few places to play soccer.

You can try this site out to meet up with folks here, or on facebook.
