So one day after school my principal decides to take me and a few teachers out for dinner. I have no idea where we are going or what we are going to eat. We stop at this little restuarant, go in and sit on the floor. My Principal asks if I have tried dog. I said no. He says you should try it. I hesitate, because I dont want to offend him but I say that I would rather just have chicken. Other teachers tell me I should try it for the experience... So I think to myself "Oh crap, they obviously brought me here to try dog and I dont want to let them down and want to show I am open to their culture." So I said, what the heck, ill try it.

So this dog soup turns up and im thinking "atleast im starving, I could eat anything right now." So I go ahead and eat some dog. "mmm mashita" I say. They are pleasantly surprised. But Im not really enjoying the meal.

After the meal, the next day teachers are shocked that I actually tried it and that I liked it - which I didnt.

I think to myself, I'm glad thats over, I hope I never have to try dog again. But a few weeks pass and they take me out again to one of the teachers homes. I see a dog chained to the shed. I am told we are eating dog, prepared by the teachers wife. Im like "oh great".

I hope I dont have to eat dog again.

Tonight is squid and noodles. Talk about a feast!

Quite strong tasting meat and fat. If it's not cooked with flavours that'll hide it-eg mustard seed, sesame-it's pretty rank esp. boshintang.

Exactly. It's also nice to bring up while you respect their culture of eating dogs and don't degrade it, they should respect your culture of NOT eating dogs and not push you into eating it.

Again...

Just tell them you won't be joining them. South Korea is a free country - you don't have to eat the damn mutt if you don't want to. I would have gone 'bye bye' and got the subway home.

Offending your principal and co-workers? I would be offended with their mind control games!

You should try it just once. It's not that bad.

So I went to China for a job interview..

after the interview the principal decides to take me and a few teachers out for dinner. I have no idea where we are going or what we are going to eat. We stop at this little restuarant, go in and sit on the floor. My Principal asks if I have tried cat. I said no. He says you should try it. I hesitate, because I dont want to offend him but I say that I would rather just have monkey.

Other teachers tell me I should try it for the experience... So I think to myself "Oh crap, they obviously brought me here to try cat and I dont want to let them down and want to show I am open to their culture." So I said, what the heck, ill try it.

So this cat soup turns up and im thinking "atleast im starving, I could eat anything right now." So I go ahead and eat some cat. "mmm 可口" I say. They are pleasantly surprised. But Im not really enjoying the meal.

After the meal, the next day teachers are shocked that I actually tried it and that I liked it - which I didnt.

I think to myself, I'm glad thats over, I hope I never have to try cat again. But the next day - they take me out again to one of the teachers homes. I see a cat on the balcony - tied up . I am told we are eating cat, prepared by the teachers wife. Im like "oh great".

I hope I dont have to eat cat again. Could have been worse though - they could have offered me monkey brains - or a newborn infant to eat...

I have no issues with eating dogs. However, beating an animal while it's alive for unfounded nutritional, epicurean, or aphrodesic effect is a poor reflection on Korea and other parts of Asia.

And yes, I recall the cow-meets-forklift incident.

Maybe you are kidding.

I tried boshintang once at a well known dog restaurant in Daegu. It was delicious. Can't say the same about the plate of skin they brought out, which made me gag.

That last link says eating dog is illegal. Shocked Should I call 119 and give an anonymous tip to the police that there are thousands of dog restaurants in the city???

I would have said in a really nerdy, mocking voice, "I don't want to try it, Bucko. Understand?"
