I'm talking about height Razz

I've heard some ridiculous stuff from my kid recently - one girl's mum makes her do 1000 jump-ropes every evening, because it will help her become taller.Another boy's parents make him play basketball by himself because he will become taller - tall people play basketball, so basketball must make you taller, some great logic right there.

Where do these ideas come from and how are such beliefs so wide spread? Don't get me started on fan death...

yeah, i just learned about "fan death"... wtf? and i thought americans were stupid!

and why do i keep hearing about their strong feelings of nationalism? their country has never contributed anything of significant value to the world, it makes no sense to have such a disproportionate amount of national pride. is it just a reaction to north korean aggression or what?

thats what we (or at least i) find so damn frustrating about it. americans r nationalists, they just call it patriotism, but it can be put up with because they have contributed so much to human society. same for the japanese. i dont mind the japs being aggressively nationalistic because theyve got damn good reason to be.

the koreans however... no reason at all to be so damn fervently nationalistic. many will tell u they do things better in korea than elsewhere, but then u ask them to give u an example, and all they come up with is kimchi or soju... well hello, ur the only country that does kimchi and soju. jeez. its pointless to try to argue with them. in their mind, their country is on top of the world no matter how much they have to lie to themselves to make that seem true in their mind.

and what is the fixation with having 4 seasons? is their education system really so bad that they believe they're somehow unique for having 4 seasons?

Whatever you do, don't argue with Koreans about fan death, the nutritional value of white rice (or lack thereof), or about the fact that other countries have 4 seasons too. Just nod, smile, and agree that Korea is number one. Trust me, your life will be much easier.

A little ironic; if you have two kids with similar genetic backgrounds and dietary intakes, and one is active to an above average degree the more sedentary one will usually end up taller. Jokes on you, Kid!

I have been asked if there are 4 season in New Zealand about 10 times while I have been in korea for 2 months. I finally said, Yes, there are 4 seasons in most countries. She looked at me in disbelief.

Oh man, don't ever, EVER get into a conversation with a Korean woman about what a mother should (or should not do) for the first 100 days after her baby is born to protect its health...including not taking showers, not using toothpaste to brush their teeth...I'm sure there are more, but I couldn't take any more of that nonsense after my girlfriend started the conversation.

They'll tell you that a mother has to stay with her baby for the first hundred days after the birth and can't go out/have visitors...why? Because she will smell like bigfoot!!!

Look at this way. Korea has never made an empire and was never a world super power. They very rarely attacked other countries and committed genocide. They just killed eachother over this tiny peninsula. So Korea's contribution to the world is that they did so little in warfare. I guess some Koreans will take this as a sign that Koreans are more peaceful, just like a guy I knew who told me Ancient Koryo could have conquered Russia and Eastern Europe but chose not to because Koreans are so peaceful.

I disagree, nationalist chest thumping gets annoying coming from anyone. Like how Americans like to claim that they are the 'Leaders of the Free World'. Sorry, no, the rest of the free world didn't get together and elect you our 'leader', America just happens to be the one superpower for the time being. Annoying BS platitudes exist in every country, Korea just seems to have more of them than usual.

But how is this different than discussing fan death? I don't think the OP's idea is to belittle the Koreans... more like pointing out another of their peculiarity.

To be honest, though - the Chinese do the same. I was always told if I skipped rope or jumped I would grow taller.... and I remember the bridge of my nose being constantly squeezed by my gramps so I would get a nice, straight nose, instead of a flat one.. I mean.. WTF? Tres Bizarre!
