US Student Disappears in Thailand

(July 29) - An international search is under way for a 29-year-old Auburn University veterinary student who vanished under what appears to be unusual circumstances in Thailand.

...surveillance tape from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport on July 14 shows his son entering the airport but then exiting the terminal before checking in for his flight. Why would he suddenly turn around and leave remains a mystery.
...
Michael Harrie is from the San Francisco, California, area. He has blue eyes and brown hair, wears eyeglasses and is 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 175 pounds. The Auburn University Department of Public Safety and Security is asking for anyone with any information on his whereabouts to call at 334-844-8888.

A 29 year old student on vacation in Thailand? Whoever heard of such a thing?

It doesn't sound that mysterious to me. Anyone ever seen "Banged Up Abroad"?

In all seriousness, hope nothing terrible has happened. But I wouldn't be surprised if this all turns out to be yet another white "kid" traveling abroad who thinks he's a hell of a lot smarter (and tougher) than he is, and has somehow ended up in a world of completely unnecessary trouble.

A lot of teachers like to vacation in Thailand after saving up some money and teaching non-stop for months on end. For some it's a part of the plan to get as much travel in as possible.

Teakdoor.com has a thread up.

According to this thread on the Thaivisa Forum, he's beentraced and has left Thailand. But due to confidentiality, they won't say what happened?

Dear Forum,

Please be informed that we have traced Michael and he has now left the Kingdom of Thailand.

Thank you all for your input

Missing kid in a foreign country? Yeah, I can certainly see how worrisome that would be. Especially since the circumstances were rather odd sounding at the beginning.

Funny enough, I think my coworkers are more worried about me studying overseas than my mom is. They think I'm gonna get shot at or kidnapped because of the whole NK thing.

Though my mom does continously believe that I should always have a cellphone on me at all times. Even in Montreal.
