I'm just curious exactly how educated and experienced the average foreign English teacher is in Korea. Thanks for participating!

And please comment and give more detail if you like, too.

I was a computer engineer for years and then got into management and then (gag) sales. I hated sales although I was good at it. I switched to education in 2001 and
spent a few years teaching high school and college in the US. Too much BS over there. Life here in Korea is so much more pleasant and I can actually have a great time AND save money. it ain't much of a carer move being here, but if you're not looking for notches on a resume, that's fine.

Oh yeah, so if I'm asking others to share, I should share, too, right? I have an M.A. in Applied Linguistics and over five years experience, teaching both children and adults both in the States and in Korea, but I've never worked in a public school or uni - all hagwon work (and the equivalent in the States).

You poll doesn't include any TESOL Certifications, so I didn't vote. My TESOL was half of a MA. It was hell to earn, but I have the chance to go back and earn my MA with another 5 courses.

Did you do a Graduate Diploma? That sounds like a good way of doing it; if you like it you can continue on to an MA, if you don't you still get a diploma out of it.

I have five years experience in China and then one year here in Korea. My degree was in women's studies. After this year I plan to get my CELTA and then head home for an MA in Linguistics. After seven years abroad it's gonna be nice to stateside for a while.

The US doesn't really have that qualification to the best of my knowledge. My program gave me a TESOL Certificate for completing half of the coursework. This would be similar to the graduate diploma/certificate in the UK to the best of my knowledge. It seemed like a good idea to me at the time, and I will probably finish up with my MA sometime in the future. I just have to make the money to do so first!!

Sorry, honestly I forgot about certificates, plus the poll only allowed you a certain maximum number of choices.

Hope you get a chance to finish up your MA. I know what you mean - it is not by any means easy once you have to study full-time and work full-time to support yourself, too.

laoshihao,

have you decided where to do your MA yet? There are a lot of good online programs these days that are run by real brick-and-mortar universities that would allow you to continue working abroad while studying... if that's what you want, it sounds like you are looking forward to being stateside for a while.
