| Could we please stop pointing a finger, calling foul, etc etc for 2 minutes? If people spent the effort they do on racism and poured it into something PRODUCTIVE, I'm sure we would have cured world hunger, cancer, and swine flu would not be an issue. Good day sir. |

So combating racism is not productive? A great many social ills spring from racism. |

What if you could do both at once?
I realize a lot of my posts here have to do with race, and I'm trying to tone it down. It's just something I think about a lot because it affects me, a lot. |

I don't believe in race, i believe in culture. The idea of race must be a throwback from the 16th century or something.
How many races are there? The traditional Four ?  |

For a time, science was on your side. However, science is now uncovering meaningful differences among groups that we label as a 'race'. For example:

There are others, but I haven't the time to go searching. If I remember correctly, Stuff You Should Know did a very interesting podcast on this topic about a year back. We have to move away from thinking of race as a category of separation to a more scientifically supportable history of ones widely extended family.

I agree that culture trumps "race." Take Jews and Palestinian Arabs, for example. Palestinians have a lot of Jewish ancestry, but they're never really called Jews and Israel doesn't accept them and likewise, "Jews" aren't popular in the West Bank and Gaza. Modern Jews are generally predominantly of European ancestry and usually look identical to other whites, but have never been well liked by white supremacist organizations. It all comes down to culture instead of genetics.

Most of these 'topics' you presented us are all "American" and therefore utterly racist 
Africans having breast cancer and lower IQ's? Sounds like another race war brewing. You couldn't sell that stuff in Canada, they'd lock you up if the mob didn't get you first
Race based on looks or place of birth is a joke. Genetially, most all humans are very identical (the Human race) and so other markers should identify us. |

The second article was a link in the first. I'm surprised Slate allowed it to be published. Anyways, I don't know how testing in Somalia or some slum in China could possibly revel any useful information.
As a side, I first came across the idea that race is related to intelligence from a non-crazy individual when reading old speeches by Lee Kuan Yew. LKY is a big believer in the idea that the Chinese are a super-intelligent race, and as such will eventually dominate the world. |

That's likely because he's an ethnic Chinese who lives in Singapore. Overseas Chinese are the very best China has to offer, and those stocks that have been overseas for decades, even hundreds of years, are no exception. |

It is a very widely held belief in SG. They're completely without any shame on this topic. I never heard someone be belligerent about it (Singaporeans of any ethnicity are among the most agreeable and polite people around). There is an 'achievement gap' between Malay, Tamil and Chinese in SG and the Chinese have very strong opinions about why. I've seen lefty Canadians and Kiwis have complete meltdowns when this topic came up. They'd (Singaporean Chinese) just politely, matter-of-fact state that the Chinese were around 10 points (on the IQ) test more intelligent that the whites, who were about 15 more than Africans. Period. I wonder where they get it:

That's actually a mild quote. Some of his speeches to the PAP back in the 80's (when they decided to counter the muslim/Malay birthrate with mainland immigration) are aggressive and strongly distasteful. |

Yeah, well as I'm sure you know, back in the day "race" and culture were much more closely identified as more countries were racially homogeneous. Race in fact used to be a byword for culture, the British often used to refer to the French as a separate "race" for example even though today we wouldn't think of such a thing (for instance, in Lord Durham's report to the British gov't recommending Responsible Government for the Canadian colonies he referred to the French as a race, which in his view should have been assimilated into English-Canadian culture). |
