Ok, so I know a bunch of you are also in this boat. Deskwarming during summer with nothing to do. Yesterday I just didn't show up, and besides a few bad looks from the vice principal, I haven't heard anything (that's probably because there are no english teachers in school now, and the VP doesn't speak English).
Anyway, I'm kinda tired today and I'm thinking about taking an extra long lunch. Maybe a 2.5 hr lunch? Do any of you guys do this? (By lunch I mean go home and take a nap). |

You are not alone. My boss has started askng my coteachers in if I am here which is a uselss hassle.
No problem so far with any sort of extended lunch but pretty soon my new contract introduces some stipulations saying that it is a full day or it is not counted. |

Today I brought my laptop with me so I can practice Korean with rosetta stone (computer at work won't let me run it). So I'll have my laptop on my desk, the monitor for my computer work on in the background with the interwebs, and i'm in a t-shirt that I just realized I spilled pizza on last night. Man. I look professional.
In the background there has been constant drilling as workers renovate the bathroom next door. I think there are a total of 3 teachers in school, plus administrative staff.
Nevertheless, there are some students milling about. It never ceases to amaze me that students come to hang out at school with absolutely nothing to do, no classes or anything. i guess there are computers, for free. But still, some of them show up at 9. Are they kicked out when their parents go to work or something? |

These were always the students that were signed up for camps.
As for long lunches, leave a coat or something. That way it looks like you're around somewhere. |

| what can you do while you are deskwarming? can' you read books, etc. or do you have to look like you are "working" (preparing lessons, etc.) ? |

Whatever you do, don't appear to be sleeping at your desk or Internet shopping. |

today i was pretty blatantly playing tower defense games on the internet. simultaneously catching up on news, foreign policy, etc
i mean honestly, what do they expect us todo. prepare for lessons the ENTIRE SUMMER?! |

Hey guys, I guess I'll join you as I just found out today after two days of coming in to desk-warm for half-days that I am supposed to be here 9-4 everyday (SEE, they're being NICE! Letting me go home at 4 instead of 5... what a nice school I have!!  ).
I'm leaving Korea in 3 weeks and my co-teacher told me teachers need to come in "to work on their teaching" and said I should do the same. ????????
I guess I have 12 sick days left I could use.... |

tell your co-teacher she's full of ddong.
this of course varies from school to school, but at my school each Korean teacher has to come in and work two full days out of the 5 weeks of summer vacation.
that's right.
TWO.
needless to say, there's never been any deskwarming at my school, either for my predecessors or myself. Of course, next year a new principal comes in, so it'll become a roll of the dice again. |

My school so far hasn't told me to come in, my co-teacher told me she thinks I shouldn't have to come in....so I just left it at that.
This week was supposed to be my "official" 7 days of vacation, so I am half expecting to get a call next week telling me to be at school.
I don't know about you people, but I'm thinking I should tell them to just not pay me for those 2 weeks and I won't come in.
I've heard of other teachers doing this, and they really can't stop you. |

Who cares what you do during summer. I watch Canucks hockey games at my desk during normal school days. I make up all my own lessons and still have 3 hours a day extra time to play. |

They're refurbishing the whole school except the English classroom and I've got a couple weeks deskwarming. I'm at the opposite end of the school from the VP and the few others around the place. This means they don't walk through the construction to visit me.
I slept for 7 hours yesterday on a collection of futons in the classroom. |

My co-teacher is mostly just the messenger. Apparently the people cracking the whip are the ADMINISTRATION OFFICE. Last semester, the VP was in charge of when I was here and decided that half-days of desk-warming would suffice. Our new VP supports the administration office's attempt at following "the rules" and "the rules" says I need to come in each day, all day.
I'm the first GET at my school and I guess the precedence I set last semester was half-days... but that was just them "being nice" I was told. |

btw. by "administration office" who do you mean?
your local POE (provincial office of education)
SMOE, GEPIK, EPIK?
or (highly unlikely) your own schoo's administration office?
I'll bet POE. They're also far more likely to stick their noses into the workings of elementary and middle schools. That's why teaching HS rocks. |
