As you know, many Korean classrooms have a computer and a projection screen. This makes using YouTube videos a great teaching resource. Please post any teaching ideas you have with YouTube links in this thread.

Here's mine. RYAN'S WELL, an inspirational story about a 6 year old boy's efforts to bring clean drinking water to the people of Uganda.

Here on YouTube, you have the first 10 minutes of a documentary on him plus my listening exercises (cut & pasted here) If you chose, you can see the entire 50 minute doc if you pay $2 via PayPal, but the first 10 minutes of free video on YouTube should be enough for most people.

Ryan's Well

Listening Task - Listen to Ryan, Ryan's teacher and his mother talk about his plan to raise funds to build a well for people in Uganda. Fill in the blanks with the words that you heard.

Listening One - Ryan's Teacher.

"It was during Lent and all the grade ones were ____________________for the Lent emissions and I had a sheet __________________ from the principal that said how much money you could save - what would give the children in Africa and Ryan was really interested in the well. He was interested in the water and that people didn't have water so he said "How much is that well again?" On the sheet, it said _____________. He goes "I'm gonna save for that."

Listening Two - Ryan

"When she explained that people were dying cause they didn't have ___________________. And that just gave me a ______________________ because...you..if I just _____________________ and open them again, in that classroom, I would see more than 75 or even a hundred things they didn't have. So, I went home and begged and begged and begged my mom and dad for $70."

Listening Three - Ryan's Mom

"He went _________________ about how people were dying because they didn't have clean water. He was ________________. He wanted $70 right there and then that he could take back to school. He thought "Oh, isn't that nice. What a nice thing to do." but he was 6 so we bascially discounted him."

Ryan - "They really _________________ at first, but I just brought it up again and again and again. And finally they said "Okay we'll give you a ___________, but we won't give you the money like - here's $70."

Mother - "So we __________________ with him and explained that $70 was an awful lot of money and that we wouldn't be able to give it to him. However, if he was ______________ about it and wanted to earn the money that we would help him by giving him some extra chores to do on top of his regular chores."

Questions:

1. Ryan Hreljac lives in Kemptville, Ontario, ________hours north / south of Ottawa.

2. Name two chores Ryan had to do to earn the money for the well.

3. How many brothers or sisters does Ryan have?

4. What is WaterCan?

5. How much did WaterCan say making a well costs?

6. How did Ryan's community feel when they heard about Ryan's project?

7. How did Ryan feel during the first TV interviews?

8. What is something Ryan doesn't like doing?

9. What does Ryan want to do when he grows up?

10. Why was Ryan upset when he received a check for $25?

So, I went home and begged and begged and begged my mom and dad for $70."

Listening Three - Ryan's Mom

"He went on and on about how people were dying because they didn't have clean water. He was desperate. He wanted $70 right there and then that he could take back to school. He thought "Oh, isn't that nice. What a nice thing to do." but he was 6 so we bascially discounted him."

Ryan - "They really ignored me at first, but I just brought it up again and again and again. And finally they said "Okay we'll give you a chance, but we won't give you the money like - here's $70."

Dev I think our role is more about getting the students to speak. So show them the video and get them to make their own sentences up and speak them. If the can't write a proper sentence they wont be able to speak one. Listening should be done with really short vids such as music. No need for long worksheets where they just fill in a blank. I tried that and it wasn't as good as getting them to write down the whole line if played over and over again.

You might take a look at this teaching recipe I put up about using short video. http://teachingrecipes.com/2009/07/30/activities-for-short-videos/

There are plenty of ways to make things more communicative and during the watching of a short video, I'd caution not to "overload" the student, just give them simple tasks to keep them focused/attentive.

Cheers,
