As at yesterday, Swine Flu deaths in Australia totalled 46 with another 103 patients in intensive care units in hospitals.
It seems to be spreading out of control here with more deaths being reported almost daily. |
I understand that scientists are worried because they think this strain has the unique potential to mutate into a more destructive form, but isn't 46 deaths just a normal number for an average flu outbreak? |
Apaarently less so, I read that every year 15000 people die in England from common 'flu', or cold as you might prefer to call it. |

Well, its only one strain, see. And there's a cure for it, and its not like the press hasn't given it more than its due: how many people can honestly say they've never heard of swine flu? |
I don't understand this - you are saying there is a cure for swine flu? Extraordinary! |

This doesn't cure swine flu. And some strains are already resistant to it. And there are people in my city in intensive care with swine flu. Why isn't this miracle cure curing them, then?

| I have two small children, and an elderly mother. Not only would they get sick, my whole support system would disintegrate (who would look after the kids/my mother - who would take care of my kids when I'm studying if my mum was sick?) and I might even have to withdraw my enrollents. Last year I had to withdraw from a subject precisely due to such a scenario when my whole family went down with a gastro flu that saw my kids prohibited from entering the day care centre and my mother sick for 5-6 weeks. I dropped a subject and never really caught up with the others, either. |
This is precisely what I don't want: mothers like you worrying excessively about getting the flu. |
Thank you for your concern, but I am not worrying excessively about the swine flu. However, I am mindful to avoid situations that are likely to find me catching any flu. I am no longer an independent person - and I rely heavily on my family's support to get me through my postgrad studies. No family support, no study. I can't afford any interuptions in my studies. Try catching up after more than a month of no study, when you only have about 25- 30 hours a week of 'child free' time (especially with these really time consuming group assignments they hit us with) in order to study and do everything else too. When you have small kids you'll see what I mean. Last year I suffered academically from such a scenario as I described. Not only that, my mum was so sick (and didn't recover for weeks) she actually wondered if she was dying. So no, I don't want to bring home the flu (any flu) to my kids and mother, but I don't stop living my life because of such a possibility.

| Given that you are more likely to die from swine flu than other flus doing the rounds, it was extremely irresponsible - given I have preschoolers and an old mum. I could even be pregnant for all he knows. |
Marginally more likely to die from the swine flu. |
I am very unlikely to die from flu because I am neither very young, very old, or infirm. However, the swine flu kills people in their twenties and thirties, so if any flu is going to kill me, it's going to be swine flu. But I doubt it would manage to do that to me. |
